48 to 72 Hour Power Failure in Downtown Vancouver effects Internet Service

A recent massive power failure effecting the downtown core of Vancouver British Columbia in Canada effected people around the world. With many Internet hosting and service companies located in the downtown core of Vancouver, this 48 hour plus power failure stressed most power back-up systems to the limit leaving many Internet customers without service.

In addition, many local businesses suffered losses in the Millions. Initial estimations from the Canadian Federation of independent business put the losses at over 36 Million Dollars. A spokesperson for BC Hydro, the local utility company responsible for power in British Columbia, BC Hydro is in no position to compensate anyone for their losses. Apparently they are passing the financial buck off on the insurance companies.

Restaurants had to throw out thousands of dollars in perishables, retailers had to close up shop and the entire financial business sector needed to shut down as there was no power to run their computers, the elevators and of course the phone systems. the fire department was kept busy with people stuck in elevators and the Vancouver Police Department who were stretched to the limit as the bulk of their resources needed to be focused on downtown traffic control.

Although this was a small outage when looked at on a world scale, the effects were felt worldwide as businesses and services in all sectors felt the lack of service from the downtown Vancouver core. Websites such as Plentyoffish, Infomine, Peer-1, bravenet, fatport as well as an independent Internet ticketing agency responsible for sales across North America.
