So what is a Blue Moon, you ask. Well, first of all, a Blue Moon is not called a blue moon due to a colour change. More simply, a Blue moon is more of an astronomical anomaly where two full moon's occur within the same calendar month.

Superstition has it, wishes made on a Blue Moon will come true, particularly those made on a New Years Eve Blue Moon. So if this is the case, what would you wish for this historical blue moon?

Amanda Knox Verdict - Guilty on all charges

Seattle sex kitten Amanda Knox has been found guilty of the 1997 murder of Merideth Kercher. The 8 person Italian Jury just announced the Guilty verdict in a midnight court room session.

The parents of Amanda Knox were at the courthouse with their daughter and had prepared two statements for the press. Hoping for an aquital, Amanda Knox's parents were preparing for a 30 minute press conference at a local hotel. Unfortunately, Amanda Knox will not be going home for Christmas as she may very well be facing life in an Italian Prison.

After the Amanda Knox verdict announcement, several questions still remain. How long will Amanda Knox remain in prison? Will Amanda Knox serve her prison sentence in the United States or Italy? This will all be answered when the judge in the case rules on sentencing in the Amanda Knox Murder trial.

Of course Amanda Knox still has the ability to appeal her murder conviction and is expected to do so. Failing the appeal, Amanda Knox may very well face life in an Italian Prison.

Case details:

Amanda Knox and her ex boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were both found guilty in the murder of Meredith Kercher in 2007.

The defence for Amanda Knox argued investigators only found one piece of DNA evidence on the scene, a cigarette butt containing Raffaele's DNA. In addition, the defence for Amanda Knox argued the amount of DNA in support of a murder conviction against Amanda Knox was so small it could not even be re-tested for accuracy.

Regardless of their objections, the jury decided against Amanda Knox in this international headline grabbing case.

Amanda Knox Jury Verdict

AMANDA KNOX FOUND GUILTY OF MURDER

The Amanda Knox murder trial in Italy is almost at a close as a jury or eight deliberates on a verdict for Amanda Knox who is being accused of the sexual assault and murder of Meredith Kercher.

Amanda Knox Jury Deliberates on Verdict

In an emotional plea, Amanda Knox took the stand to address the jury “Now it’s your turn,” Amanda Knox says she tries to stay positive in the important moments, and that this is one of them. Amanda Knox added, she was afraid of having to wear “an assassin’s mask” for the rest of her life.

Here is the Video of the Amanda Knox final statement before the jury before they sat to decide on the verdict in the Amanda Knox Trial

Merideth Kercher’s parents, who have pretty much stayed away from the trial in the murder of their daughter, are expected to be present for the verdict in the Amanda Knox murder trial.

Amanda Knox Post Verdict Press Conference

Amanda Knox's parents have prepared two statements for the press in anticipation of the verdict in the Amanda Knox murder trial. If, on the other hand, Amanda Knox is found guilty, they will make a brief statement outside the courthouse before they leave.

Thanksgiving Shooting in Florida leaves 6 year old girl dead

A family in the Jupiter region of Palm Beach Florida has little to be thankful for today as they mourn the loss of 4 family members, including 6-year-old Makayla Sitton.

At the time of the Jupiter Palm Beach shooting massacre, 17 friends and family had gathered at the Sitton home at 104 Via Veracruz. At this time, authorities have no idea as to why 35-year-old Michael Merihige of Miami opened fire on the house full of thanksgiving revellers. Palm Beach Police have now issued a nationwide manhunt for 35-year-old Michael Merihige of Miami who was last seen leaving the scene in a 2007 blue 4 door Toyota Camry with Florida license plate number W42 7JT. 35-year-old Michael Merihige is reported to live on S.W. 88th Avenue in Miami and he is considered armed and dangerous.

Shortly before the Thanksgiving shooting which left 4 family members dead, Makayla's father, Jim Sitton, had tucked his 6-year old daughter into bed Thursday night. He said she was eager for her performance in the Nutcracker on Friday. An upset and grieving father, Jim Sitton told local television crews "God packed a lot of sweetness into that little body."

Dead at the scene of the Florida Thanksgiving shooting were Michael Merihige's sisters, Lisa and Carla Merhige, as well as Ramon Joseph. 6-year-old Makayla Sittondied later in hospital. A fifth man is currently in hospital as a result of injuries sustained during the Palm Beach Florida Thanksgiving shooting.

PHILIPPINE MASSACRE - "Attack on Democracy"

In a country known for both political corruption as well as environmental tragedies, the people of the Philippines are trying to deal with an attack, not only on human life, but on Democracy as well.

The province of Maguindanao in the Southern Philippines is in virtual lock down after Philippine President Gloria Arroyo declared a state of emergency after what is being called the worst political massacre in Philippine history. With 46 people dead, the Philippine Massacre started when political rival Esmael Mangudadatu arranged a convoy to deliver his nomination for governor of Maguindanao province. Maguindanao province has been ruled by Andal Ampatuan for the past nine years. It is alleged his clan organized the killings to ensure Mangudadatu would not register as a candidate for governor.

Many critics of the regime doubt any justice will be served for the Philippine Massacre as Andal Ampatuan is a known ally of Philippine President Arroyo, having supported her run for presidency. Nonoy Espina from the National Union of Journalists in the Philippines echo's this sentiment “We don’t see anything much happening towards getting the perpetrators and… those responsible for this carnage. The army has identified a main suspect as a town mayor in fact, who belongs to one of the prominent political families, who happen also to be very, very close to our administration here.”

Since the Philippine Massacre, where supporters of Esmael Mangudadatu were stopped in Ampatuan, and consequentially herded several miles away, and shot. According to witnesses, several of the victims of the Philippine Massacre were mutilated and some people were thrown into the shallow graves.

The EU is condemning the Philippine political Massacre, in a statement by European Union External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner "I condemn in the strongest possible terms the barbaric killing of innocent civilians, including women, journalists and lawyers, who were preparing to participate in the electoral process in the Philippines."

David Dadge, International Press Institute director, see's the Philippine massacre as an attack on democracy and humanity “This is a senseless slaughter… It is the work of journalists to report on political campaigns on behalf of the public. By acting in this way these individuals have shown that they not only stand outside of democracy but also outside of humanity.”

At this time, the Philippine military suspects the politically powerful Ampatuan family as being the ring leaders behind the Massacre and has since deployed troops to search for the provincial governor. President Arroyo's government was very careful to distance themselves from the accused Ampatuan family. In a prepeared statement, she denounced the Philippine Massacre as "unconscionable" further stating nobody was "untouchable." Following through on the words of the capital, the national police chief dismissed Provincial Police Chief Zukarno Adil Dicay as well as three other officers believed to be complicit in the Massacre. According to National Police spokesman Leonardo Espina told local media that Police Chief Zukarno Adil Dicay had been seen with some of the gunmen earlier in the day of the Philippine Massacre on Monday.

Self Employment Program being offered by many states

If you are unemployed and receiving state unemployment benefits, you may qualify for a Self Employment Assistance Program. With the economy going to hell in a hand basket and not finding its' way back anytime soon, the National jobless rate is skyrocketing. Many, in fact, are comparing the current economic recession to that of the 1930's.

So where does self-employment fit into this equation. Well, typically during most recessions, unemployed individuals look to other sources for the income they need to support their families. In many cases, those with an entrepreneurial spirit look towards self-employment. The thing is, there is substantial cost and time involved in setting up a business on your own and for the most part, Self Employed individuals will not realise any sort of profit for the first few years.

For that reason, the national Unemployment Insurance System, which provides funding for state unemployment benefits, also provides a Self-Employment Assistance Program for those seeking self employment. The Self Employment Assistance Program is a special program in which state unemployment offices may voluntarily participate.

As many of you know, in order to qualify for unemployment insurance, you must be unemployed and searching for work. If you choose to become Self-employed, you are no longer unemployed nor are you actively searching for work (This is of course by government standards.) So how then, is an unemployed person able to enter the world of Self Employment?

Well, this is where the Self Employment Assistance Program (SEAP) comes into play. If you become unemployed, then you might be eligible to receive self-employment help as part of your state unemployment benefits. The Self Employment Assistance Program provides self-employment assistance and encouragement to eligible unemployed workers, including those with disabilities, who wish to try their hands at self employment. From my research, Oregon, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania New Jersey, New York, and Maine were participating in the Self Employment Assistance Program.

Under the Self-Employment Assistance program, unemployed workers may remain eligible to collect a weekly funding to help them get by while they take a stab at Self Employment. Being accepted into the State Self Employment Assistance program will allow selected individuals to circumvent the usual "searching for work" clause. There are however certain requirement and you should check to see if your state offers the Self Employment Assistance Program (SEAP) BEFORE you decide to take the first step into Self Employment. Remember, starting your business before you are accepted into the Self Employment Assistance Program may very well disqualify you for Unemployment Insurance Benefits.

Self-employment under the program includes starting up a small business or becoming an independent contractor, such as a consultant. The weekly allowance is the same dollar amount as weekly unemployment compensation, which varies by state.

As as a self-employed individual, you must pay quarterly taxes on your own and provide yourself with "employee" benefits, such as health and disability insurance. To learn more, visit the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), a government agency which provides free self-employment help.

Generally, to be eligible for the Self-Employment Assistance program, as indicated, you must have first become eligible to collect state unemployment benefits, such as because your employer permanently terminated your employment through no fault of your own.

Then you must be identified by the state unemployment office as an unemployed worker whom, according to statistics, is likely to exhaust unemployment benefits before landing a new employee job.

If you're interested in receiving self-employment help, then ask about the program when applying for unemployment benefits. If and when the time comes, you would apply for unemployment benefits at the relevant state unemployment office or One-Stop Career Center.

If the state unemployment office notifies you that you are not eligible to participate in the Self-Employment Assistance program, then you likely may appeal the decision; follow the instructions provided in your benefit denial notice or consult a lawyer.

For those living in Canada, I know for a fact HRDC has a similar program which has been in effect for about 15 years now. I went through the program in Vancouver, BC and can vouch for its' effectiveness. When seeking out self-employment, be weary of the "get rich quick" schemes. There are many companies out there designed to take advantage of people seeking self employment. MLM's are prime examples, although you may be able to make money at them, you have more of a chance of making money by coming up with your own idea... and this is not selling speakers out of the back of your van.

State Of Emergency Declared for Vancouver Island as a result of Severe Flooding

The west coast of British Columbia is currently experiencing some serious rainfall and flooding issues. So bad is the flooding on Vancouver Island, that the communities of North Cowichan and Duncan are currently under a state of Emergency as the local governement is evacuating many of the residents.

So bad is the rainfall in the Cowichan Valley, as of 11 a.m. PT Friday The local rain gauge at Mesachie Lake recorded 157 millimetres of rain for the previous 48 hours. At this time, officials have confirmed that flooding of the Cowichan River and Koksilah River have forced the evacuation of about 300 to 400 homes in the Cowichan Valley and Duncan area of southeast Vancouver Island and the storm is showing no signs of letting up.

Cowichan Valley locals are finding themselves relying on boats and rafts for transportation as many vehicles are surrounded, if not engulfed with water. Many houses on Vancouver Island are filling up with water fast which will result in a very heavy clean-up bill. There is no indication whether the Federal Government will pitch in with disaster relief funds for those not covered by insurance. With the World Economy in crisis, Canada is no exception and this current turn of events is sure not going to make things any better.

The west Coast of British Columbia and Vancouver Island are known for heavy rainfall, just as the Pacific Northwest in the United States. In fact many residents often joke about the 10 months of seemingly dark and rainy days followed by two short months of sunshine. Although this may normally be considered a slight exageration, this years' rainy season has definately started out with a bang.

The Lower Mainland of Vancouver is currently experiencing thunderstorms and power outages are becoming a daily occurance for many area's of the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. Overflowing drainage ditches and flooded streets are now commonplace in many of the low lying regions of British Columbia as this severe rain storm shows no sign of letting up.

While Canada's West Coast (AKA Wet Coast) is experiencing sever rain the East Coast is looking at a clightly whiter form of precipitation. Environment Canada has issued a snow fall warning for Batteau to L'Anse-au-Clair - Mary's Harbour and south in Newfoundland / Labrador where 20 CM of snow is expected to fall by midnight.

Mother sells 5 year old Daughter

A disturbing story out of Fayetteville North Carolina has 25 year old mother Antoinette Davis charged with with human trafficking and prostitution offences related offences in connection with her selling her 5 year old daughter into a life of sexual servatude.

Pregnant mother, Antoinette Davis first reported her 5 year old daughter, Shaniya, missing last tuesday. Since the report, Fayetteville police had grown more suspicious of the details within the mother's statements. Further investigation as weill as surveillance footage last placed 5 year old Shaniya being carried into a closeby hotel room by 25 year old Mario Andrette McNeill, an aquaintance of the mother.

On Friday, Mario McNeill turned himself into the Police admitting he kidnapped the 5 year old Shaniya. According to arrest documents, mother, Antoinette Davis "knowingly provided Shaniya Davis with the intent that she be held in sexual servitude." In other word, she sold her 5 year old daughter in a a sex ring.

The truly sad part of the story came later when the body of Shaniya Davis was found dead off a heavily wooded road in a rural area of North Carolina on Monday. Police would not release details of the condition of Shaniya's body or the cause of death.

The father of 5 year old Shaniya Davis is overcome with despair. The holder of primary custody, Bradley Lockhart, said he raised his daughter for several years but last month decided to let her stay with her mother, a decision he will forever regret "I should've never let her go over there," he told the Associated Press.

Rudy Guliani upset over 911 Civilian Trial

There is renewed concern in New York city over the proposed civilian trial of 9/11 conspirator Khalid Sheikh Mohammad. According to reports, Khalid Sheikh Mohammad requested a civilian trial over the military trial normally used for other recent terrorist cases.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is upset over the Obama Administrations decision to grant 9/11 conspirator Khalid Sheikh Mohammad the civilian trial in New York City. Rudy Giuliani said calling the decision a "pre-911 approach." Having been the mayor of New York City through the 9/11 bombing and following rescue and clean-up efforts, Rudy Giuliani is worried about History repeating itself.

Referring to the way the US dealt with the 1993 World trade centre bombing, Rudy Guiliani said the Obama administration was making a costly mistake by granting 9/11 conspirator Khalid Sheikh Mohammad the US Civilian trial he requested. Rudy Guliani went on to say such a high-profile trial in New York City would burden New York City both with the added risk of an attack and the added cost of security expenses "Of course it's going to create more security concerns. Just wait and see how much New York City spends on this in order to protect him," Giuliani said. "This gives all the benefits to the terrorists and much less benefits to the public."

Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., on the other hand, is for the civilian trial of 9/11 conspirator Khalid Sheikh Mohammad stating "If we try him before military officers, that image of a soldier will be portrayed by the Islamic community. That's not the image we want." Reed further went on to say, a Military trial would present Khalid Sheikh Mohammad as a "Holy Warrior."

Reed said a civilian aquittal of admitted 9/11 "mastermind" Khalid Sheikh Mohammadare is "highly unlikely." "When the jury hands down the verdict," Reed said, "He will know he's lost."

shatteredeyes13, a pregnant mother has this to say about the T-Mobile Service outage on her only form of communication:
Lynn, MA is down. I do expect t-mobile will be providing some sort of compensation for this problem. I pay my rather expensive bill every month on time. This is my only phone, I am pregnant and have a young son, god forbid something were to happen during this outage. What then? I am very unhappy right now about this.

ccresp01 is another expectant mother who echos Shatteredeyes' concern over the T-Mobile Service outage:
okay so this is crap and i do have the right to complain because i am pregnant and what if something happens to me and no one is here to pick me up to go to the hospital it will be your service fault because if i cant get a hold of anyone i am going to call you guys and you guys do need to get this problem fixed right away......... So Please can you hurry and get this fixed i dont need complications right now!!!!!!!!!

ami702 need her phone so she can continue her argument with her boyfriend. (Kinda cute)

It seems as though a lot of people are getting theirs back (according to facebook). But I still haven't gotten mine. I go to school 30 miles away in Mobile, AL and live in Fairhope AL. I didn't have service during my whole night class (not that I needed it then), and I assumed I would get it as I drove across the bay... didn't get it, and here I am 30 miles away... at 9 35 pm. Still without. Would kind of like an explanation, seeing as I am super dependant on my cell phone. And am currently arguing with my boyfriend and would like to continue that argument =)

So.. .southern Alabama... still out.

DarkChocolate is so upset about the T-Mobile Service outage he/she is talking class action lawsuit. Interesting idea, but I do not think it would fly, cell companies have lawyers who make sure there is a clause in the contract.

OMFG.......some people here we go to this person I had to write to u on behalf of the sane consumers of T-mobile. I dont care if t-mobile is the cheapest it AINT FREE...so right now I have 0 service but Im not gonna get a 0 bill. As far as the celluar service with tech being like it is today if everyone else thats paying their bill is getting service I want what I pay for too. n thats service not mistakes n not excuses. they keep sayin 5%they wont have to worry about thats 5% huh .....but hey at least u can stop workin for free go apply for a job I no they should b hiring go get paid for being stupid u will b in good company...suck up...the only way my cell fone shouldnt b workin is if global warning has been issued but if verizon, att, sprint has service n my bill is paid I WANT MY SERVICE WORKIN...CAN U SAY CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT...

kleuzinger had this to say about the T-Mobile service outage and the T-Mobile "Apology"

So, you sincerely apologize. I can't call my mother on the anniversary of my father's death. Well as long as you apologize. Pathetic

1. My wife's phone cut out during a job interview. - twice (she didn't get the job)

2. I can't get signal in my own home. - I live in Dallas, not the boonies.

3. I have at least one dropped call a day.

We originally left AT&T to save money. The service is cheaper, but it IS NOT a better value.

This is it. I am done. When my contract expires, I would not re-up if THEY GAVE ME MONEY to use the service.

Bitter and Irritated,

Kenn

Sexyfuneralboy (his nickname, not my observation) is in abit of a life and death situation with the T-Mobile service outage. Just goes to show, one cannot rely on one technology when doing business.

T-Mobile........... Service in atlanta is down........... I am a funeral director and i need my phone just incase a family calls and they are in need of my service. Its kinda difficult to explain when someone has lost there loved one and i say of my service was down..... Please speed up the process and get us up and running! Thanks In Advance!

USUCK has an interesting point on the whole "5% of our network" thing. Honestly, I was thinking the same thing. It looks like a nationwide T-Mobile Service outage to me

Hey mathematically challenged ( and yes I'm spelling challenged)! 5% means 5%! Let's see, Michigan, Texas, Florida, Ohio, New York - that is 5% of the state and we know they don't have 100% coverage in the 50 states. Look, don't make excuses for them - I only expect the truth. If it is 50% of the network, then tell us. We can handle it. We can figure out what to do. We have computers! Just come clean. Oh, and by the way, I do not expect a refund. Like someone wise earlier said, when we lose power no one refunds us anything! Just the way it is.

CIT Group Applies for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection

CIT files for 5th largest U.S. bankruptcy

CIT Group Inc., one of the nation's leading funders of small and medium-sized businesses, filed for the fifth largest bankruptcy by assets in U.S. history Sunday as part of a reorganization plan that has the support of an overwhelming majority of debtholders.

In a statement regarding their filing for Bankruptcy protection, CIT Group said it is asking the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York for a quick approval of the prepackaged plan. CIT said none of its operating subsidiaries would be affected by the filing, allowing them to continue operations.

"The decision to proceed with our plan of reorganization will allow CIT to continue to provide funding to our small business and middle market customers, two sectors that remain vitally important to the U.S. economy," said CIT (CIT, Fortune 500) chairman Jeffrey M. Peek.

In the bankruptcy filing, CIT Group said it had $71 billion in assets and $64.9 billion in liabilities. Only Lehman Brothers, Washington Mutual, Worldcom and General Motors had more in assets when they filed for protection.

CIT Group's position in the business world is crucial. CIT Group says it is the leading provider of factoring, a key element in the day-to-day financing of the retail industry. CIT Group's key role in shipping goods is illustrated by its statement that it is the nation's third-largest lessor of rail cars and the world's third-largest lessor of aircraft.

While the required percentage of debtholders approved the prepackaged bankruptcy procedure, CIT Group said it did not receive the required support from bondholders for a $5.9 billion debt exchange offer that would have prevented the Chapter 11 filing.

CIT Group said it expects the reorganization to total debt by approximately $10 billion, significantly reduce its liquidity needs over the next three years, enhance its capital ratios and accelerate its return to profitability.

CIT Group said an additional $4.5 billion in credit obtained Wednesday will allow it to meet the needs of its clients and continue day-to-day operations during the bankruptcy approval process. CIT Group said it has also obtained an additional $1 billion in credit to provide supplemental liquidity.

CIT Group also said it has filed motions in the bankruptcy court to allow for the continued payment of employees, and to allow the company to pay vendors and other creditors in full.

Common shareholders, however, will be out of luck. CIT Group said all existing common and preferred stock will be cancelled upon emergence from bankruptcy protection. That would likely include preferred stock from the $2.3 billion in funding from the U.S. government's Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) CIT Group received in its efforts to stay afloat.

CIT Group sought a second federal bailout in July but was rejected. CIT Group was then able to get a $3 billion loan from bondholders in order to stave off bankruptcy -- at least for a little while.

CIT Group shares were trading at 64 cents after hours Friday, having closing at 72 cents during regular trading hours. CIT Group stock traded above $60 as recently as 2007.

On Friday, CIT Group reached an agreement under which Carl Icahn, a prominent investor who had opposed CIT Group's efforts to re-organize. Icahn's hedge fund firm, Icahn Capital LP, will provide CIT Group with a $1 billion credit line.

The credit line can be used as debtor-in-possession financing as part of the bankruptcy procedure.
Separately, CIT Group said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday that it had struck an agreement with Goldman Sachs (GS, Fortune 500) to change the terms of a loan it had originally sought from the Wall Street firm in June.

In reducing the size of the loan to $2.125 billion from $3 billion, CIT Group will pay Goldman a termination fee of $285 million and will post $250 million in collateral.

In return, Goldman agreed not to terminate the credit facility in the event of a CIT Group bankruptcy. Prior to Friday's announcement, Goldman Sachs was poised to collect $1 billion when CIT Group filed for bankruptcy, according to reports.

"He was gonna kill me," one alleged victim said.

"I have scars on my neck and nerve damage. I couldn't leave the house for months. I was afraid to go to the store. I could not sleep."

The alleged victim told local reporters that when she turned down an offer from Sowell to drink beer with him, he "punched her in the face and dragged her to his house," according to Fox 8 Cleveland.

She managed to escape from his house and flag down police, Fox 8 Cleveland reported. Sowell was arrested for rape, kidnapping and robbery — but the case never made it to court.

Six bodies found in the home of Anthony Sowell

Other women weren't as lucky as these alleged victims. Police found six decomposing bodies at Anthony Sowell's Ohio home last week, four years after he was released from a U.S. prison after serving 15 years for a rape conviction.

Two bodies were identified by county Coroner Frank Miller as black females and one death was ruled a homicide. No race or gender was determined for the others. Autopsies were performed on all six bodies.
On Saturday, the coroner's office confirmed that all six bodies were female, and most of them appeared to have been killed by strangulation, according to Fox 8 Cleveland.

Anthony Sowell Arrestest

Police spokesman Lt. Thomas Stacho said Sowell was arrested as he walked down the street on the east side of Cleveland. Sowell initially denied he was the man authorities were looking for but admitted his identity as officers began fingerprinting him, Stacho said.

Police established a command post in the neighborhood to take missing-person reports and additional information on outstanding missing persons in the neighborhood.

Teresa Hicks, 48, was among the neighbors who said they were relieved about the arrest but left with a heightened fear of crime. She said she has known Sowell since high school.

"He Was Crazy"

"He was crazy," she said from her porch. "Sometimes he would just go off if he didn't have his way."

Darren Dunlap, 38, frequently visits the neighborhood to see his brother or friends. He said Sowell was known for borrowing money and looking for scrap metal to sell.
Hicks said she didn't think Sowell had a job but understood from conversations with him that he lived on a monthly check. She said she didn't know its source.

As a convicted sex offender, Sowell was required to report regularly to the sheriff's office, which said he had complied.

Police were checking crime reports to find matches for similarities to the most recent allegation against Sowell or the 1989 rape case against him that resulted in his conviction. They also were checking missing-person reports back to June 2005, when Sowell was released.

The first two bodies were found Thursday night when police went to Sowell's home to arrest him on charges of felonious assault and rape. Detectives with a search warrant found the bodies on the third floor of a duplex and began checking a fresh grave dug in the basement. Their advanced state of decomposition suggested the bodies had been in the home a long time. By Saturday, six bodies were counted.

TYPHOON MIRINAE adds to problems in Philippines

The Philippines have been battered by yet another deadly typhoon. Over the weekend, Typhoon Mirinae has killed at least 20 people as crews struggle to restore the damage from Typhoon Mirinae. The relentless floodwaters from a series of typhoons in the region are making people sick from Leptosphirosis, a disease passed through animal urine, usually rats. Eighty-nine people in the capital have died of the illness, as have more than 100 in outlying regions.

Typhoon Mirinae ripped through Manila and the surrounding provinces over the last two days and has subsequently added to the pools of stagnant water throught the northern region of the Philippines. The flood is only being worsened by the smelly piles of garbage and other waste that is blocking drainage systems. The rat population in Manila has grown through the progression of these storms, an epidemic which is adding to the outbreak of Leptosphirosis.

"We have a lot of people in the hospital because of leptospirosis," says mother of 2, Jillian Ramirez. Leptosphirosis is a bacterial infection which is acquired when people with open wounds come into contact with dirty water. Treatment for Leptosphirosis is complex and failure to treat in time can result in death. According to Philippine Health officials, at least 2,000 people are in hospital suffering from leptospirosis which has no vaccine.

Typhoon Mirinae weakened Sunday as it headed over the South China Sea towards Vietnam's central coast. Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has already ordered residents to begin evacuating high-risk areas of five coastal provinces and ordered Vietnamese fishermen in the South China Sea to seek shelter immediately.

Leptospirosis (also known as Weil's disease, Weil's syndrome, canicola fever, canefield fever, nanukayami fever, 7-day fever, "Fort Bragg fever," and "Pretibial fever") is a bacterial zoonotic disease caused by spirochaetes of the genus Leptospira that affects humans and a wide range of animals, including mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles. It was first described by Adolf Weil in 1886 when he reported an "acute infectious disease with enlargement of spleen, jaundice and nephritis". Leptospira was first observed in 1907 from a post mortem renal tissue slice.

Though being recognised among the world's most common zoonoses, leptospirosis is a relatively rare bacterial infection in humans. The infection is commonly transmitted to humans by allowing water that has been contaminated by animal urine to come in contact with unhealed breaks in the skin, eyes or with the mucous membranes. Outside of tropical areas, leptospirosis cases have a relatively distinct seasonality with most of them occurring August–September/February–March.

In humans, leptospiral infection causes a wide range of symptoms, and some infected persons may have no symptoms at all. Leptospirosis is a biphasic disease that begins with flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, myalgias, intense headache). The first phase resolves, and the patient is briefly asymptomatic until the second phase begins. This is characterized by meningitis, liver damage (causing jaundice), and renal failure; because of the wide range of symptoms the infection is often wrongly diagnosed. This leads to a lower registered number of cases than there really are. Symptoms of leptospirosis include high fever, severe headache, chills, muscle aches, and vomiting, and may include jaundice, red eyes, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and/or a rash. The symptoms in humans appear after a 4–14 day incubation period.

Leptospirosis treatment is a relatively complicated process comprising two main components: suppressing the causative agent and fighting possible complications. Aetiotropic drugs are antibiotics, such as cefotaxime, doxycycline, penicillin, ampicillin, and amoxicillin (doxycycline can also be used as a prophylaxis). There are no human vaccines; animal vaccines are only for a few strains, and are only effective for a few months. Human therapeutic dosage of drugs is as follows: doxycycline 100 mg orally every 12 hours for 1 week or penicillin 1–1.5 MU every 4 hours for 1 week. Doxycycline 200–250 mg once a week is administered as a prophylaxis.[citation needed] In dogs, penicillin is most commonly used to end the leptospiremic phase (infection of the blood), and doxycycline is used to eliminate the carrier state.

Supportive therapy measures (esp. in severe cases) include detoxication and normalization of the hydro-electrolytic balance. Glucose and salt solution infusions may be administered; dialysis is used in serious cases. Elevations of serum potassium are common and if the potassium level gets too high special measures must be taken. Serum phosphorus levels may likewise increase to unacceptable levels due to renal failure. Treatment for hyperphosphatemia consists of treating the underlying disease, dialysis where appropriate, or oral administration of calcium carbonate, but not without first checking the serum calcium levels (these two levels are related). Corticosteroids administration in gradually reduced doses (e.g., prednisolone starting from 30–60 mg) during 7–10 days is recommended by some specialists in cases of severe haemorrhagic effects. Organ specific care and treatment are essential in cases of renal, liver or heart involvement.

Taylor Mitchell - Feeling the pull of the road

Canadian folk singer died doing something she loved, mother says

(CNN) -- A rising Canadian folk singer was killed by coyotes this week in a national park in Nova Scotia, a park spokesman said Thursday.

Taylor Mitchell, 19, was at the beginning of the Skyline Trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park on Tuesday afternoon when she was attacked, according to Chip Bird, the Parks Canada field unit superintendent for Cape Breton.

Bird said hikers saw the coyotes attacking Mitchell and called 911. She was airlifted to a hospital in Halifax, where she died about 12 hours later, he said.

Mitchell was recently nominated for Young Performer of the Year honors by Canadian Folk Music Awards. She was touring the Maritime provinces and had a break between gigs to go hiking Tuesday, her manager, Lisa Weitz, said in an e-mail.

"She loved the woods and had a deep affinity for their beauty and serenity," she wrote.

"Words can't begin to express the sadness and tragedy of losing such a sweet, compassionate, vibrant, and phenomenally talented young woman," Weitz said.

"Her warmth, loving nature, astounding artistry, and infectious enthusiasm will be so missed and forever remembered."

Read more about who Taylor Mitchell was

Mitchell, who was originally from the Georgian Bay area in Ontario, lived in Toronto, Weitz said.

Bird said the area where the attack occurred is popular and well traveled. It remained closed, and park authorities had shot one coyote believed to be involved. A pathologist will test the animal's body for diseases that might have triggered the attack, he said.

Searches for other aggressive animals in the park continue, he said.

"Public safety is our primary concern," he said.

He said no other coyote attacks had ever occurred in the park. "We've had coyotes approach people too closely," he said, and about six years ago one nipped a person.

That animal was killed because of "lack of fear," he said.

But Tuesday's attack is "unprecedented and a totally isolated incident," he said.

In a written statement, Emily Mitchell described her daughter as "a seasoned naturalist and well versed in wilderness camping. She loved the woods and had a deep affinity for their beauty and serenity. Tragically it was her time to be taken from us so soon.

"We take a calculated risk when spending time in nature's fold -- it's the wildlife's terrain," Emily Mitchell's statement continued. "When the decision had been made to kill the pack of coyotes, I clearly heard Taylor's voice say, 'please don't, this is their space.' She wouldn't have wanted their demise, especially as a result of her own. She was passionate about animals, was an environmentalist, and was also planning to volunteer at the Toronto Wildlife Centre in the coming months."

Michael Johnston, Mitchell's producer for her debut album, "For Your Consideration," said the singer was a "brilliant and beautiful light that people were naturally drawn to."

"She was so young and talented. Her big dreams were a perfect match with her big, kind heart."

He said he and his family would soon be organizing a celebration of her life.

Coyote attacks on humans are extremely rare, said Michael O'Brien, wildlife manager of furbearers and upland game for Nova Scotia.

It is "not expected or normal behavior," he said, although he said there had been aggressive incidents in Nova Scotia before, but no deaths.

Illness, injury and familiarity with humans can affect an animal's behavior, he said.

Those who knew Canadian folk musician Taylor Mitchell say her passion for her craft was matched by her affinity for nature.

Fresh out of high school, she embarked upon a three-week tour of Eastern Canada earlier this month full of hope over her blossoming career and excited to explore the region with a new car and driver's license.

The 19-year-old rising star was in between gigs when, according to a Nova Scotia Cape Breton Highlands National Park official, she was killed by coyotes during a hike on Tuesday afternoon.

"If there can be any comfort at all, it is knowing that Taylor was doing two of the things she loved most, sharing story and song on the road and spending time in nature's fold," her manager, Lisa Weitz said in an e-mail. "She loved the woods and had a deep affinity for their beauty and serenity."

Mitchell was a "seasoned naturalist" well versed in wilderness camping who wouldn't want the coyotes responsible for her death to be killed, her mother said Thursday.

"When the decision had been made to kill the pack of coyotes, I clearly heard Taylor's voice say, 'please don't, this is their space.' She wouldn't have wanted their demise, especially as a result of her own. She was passionate about animals, was an environmentalist and was also planning to volunteer at the Toronto Wildlife Centre in the coming months," Emily Mitchell said in a statement Thursday.

"Tragically, it was her time to be taken from us so soon," the mother said.

When she was 15, Mitchell began vocal lessons with her future producer, Michael Johnston.

"Taylor inspired and impressed everyone from her musical peers to members of the Canadian roots-music community who were two and three times her age," he said in a statement.

"They saw in her the rarest of the gifts -- an ability to sing not only from the heart, but in a way that transcended her age and experience and became something universal."

The Toronto-based musician's career began to take off earlier this year after the April release of her debut album, "For Your Consideration."

She was nominated for Young Performer of the Year honors by the Canadian Folk Music Awards, which will be awarded in November.

On her Facebook page, she detailed her busy summer performance schedule, describing it as her "craziest summer yet."

In July, she said she took a Greyhound bus to perform in the Young Performers Program at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, her first show west of Ontario, which featured acts including Arlo Guthrie, Neko Case and Elvis Costello.

She played more shows in the Toronto area, relishing the airplay her album was receiving, and worked on songs for her next album, Weitz said.

Yet she managed to return to nature with her aunt, mother and best friend at the family cottage in Owen Sound, Ontario, delighting in its simple joys.

"Our cottage is on the shores of Georgian bay. It's 125 years old with three bedrooms that sleep two and one bedroom that sleeps four, plus a bunkhouse. It's old and creaky and absolutely beautiful. As I sit on my couch in my apartment, I'm homesick for the precariously slanted stairs, tennis courts, lake and wonderful memories," Mitchell said on her Facebook page.

Before she set out eastward for her tour of the Maritimes, she shared her works in progress at the Ontario Council of Folk Music conference in Ottawa, impressing all those in attendance, Weitz said.

"Taylor Mitchell's vocal style and consummate songwriting craft belied her vernal years. Indeed, her songs told the tales of a seeker, a sojourner with a sage wisdom atypical of most, let alone one of such tender years," Weitz said.

On her Facebook page, she had begun counting down the days to her East Coast tour in September, saying in a September 18 status update that she was "feeling the pull of the road."

In her last post on the site, she described playing a show in someone's home, calling it "a welcome dose of normality after a whirlwind weekend" at the Ontario Council of Folk Music.

Those closest to her said they'll derive inspiration from her passion for life.

"Taylor was my shining light, my baby, my confidante and best friend," her mother said. "I don't know how to move forward from here but I know that she would want that for me, and I will try to do that in her memory and celebrate her life in the way she lived it -- with passion, commitment and an unbridled loving heart."

Military Chopper Collides with Coast Guard Plane

Search for Survivors of Midair Crash Between Coast Guard Plane, Military Chopper

Officials in California were searching Friday for survivors of a midair collision between a Coast Guard plane and a Marine Corps helicopter with up to nine people on board.

Coast Guard Capt. Thomas Ferris told reporters that they were still in an active search-and-rescue phase.

"Our assumption is always that they are alive," Ferris said Friday. "We have not found any human remains at this point. There is a substantial debris field."

The crash was reported at 7:10 p.m. Thursday, about 50 miles off the San Diego County coast and 15 miles east of San Clemente Island, Coast Guard spokeswoman Petty Officer Allyson Conroy said.

A pilot reported seeing a fireball near where the aircraft collided, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said, and the Coast Guard informed the FAA that debris from a C-130 had been spotted. The Coast Guard plane that crashed was a C-130.

The Coast Guard crew members had survival gear onboard their aircraft, including exposure suits that could have allowed them to survive in the water for hours, Petty Officer Henry Dunphy said Friday from San Diego.

"We're hoping to find survivors," he said. "We're not ruling that out."

At least seven Coast Guard and Navy ships and several helicopters continued a search that ran overnight under a bright moon in calm seas.

"We've pretty much thrown everything we have at it right now," Dunphy said.

The Coast Guard plane was based in Sacramento and was on a search-and-rescue mission when the collision occurred, Dunphy said. He did not have details of the mission.

The AH-1W Super Cobra helicopter was on a training mission when it went down, said Cpl. Michael Stevens, a spokesman for the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station.

The Cobra and its crew are part of Marine Aircraft Group 39, based at Camp Pendleton, and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, which is headquartered at Miramar, Stevens said.

San Clemente Island is the southernmost of the eight Channel Islands located 68 nautical miles west of San Diego. The Navy has owned and trained at San Clemente Island since 1934, according to the island's Web site. Naval Air Station, North Island is responsible for the island's administration.

Meanwhile, the Coast Guard resumed its search Friday morning for two missing Navy pilots and their plane off the central Texas coast. The search had to be suspended Thursday night because of stormy weather.

Petty Officer Charles Reaves said a plane and a helicopter resumed the search shortly after 7:30 a.m. Friday.

Naval Air Station Corpus Christi lost contact with the Navy T-34 training plane Wednesday afternoon. The single-engine plane's last known location was near San Jose Island, east of Rockport and 2 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico.
