Indonesia Earthquake September 2009

With the recent rash of Earthquakes and seismic activity in the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean, residents are starting to worry. This is an understandable concern as the region has been hit with two major earthquakes in as many days.

Yesterday (September 29, 2009) an earthquake struck in the Pacific Ocean just off the coast of American Samoa. The Samoa Earthquake resulted in a Tsunami wave which caused destruction on the Island of American Samoa as well as neighbouring Islands and a Tsunami watch continued throughout the day for area's as far away as Hawaii and the California coastline. For more on the September 29th 2009 Samoa Earthquake and Tsunami

Today, (September 30, 2009) an Earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale hit approximately 50 KM off the coast of Sumatra. The massive underwater Earthquake, which had a depth of 85 kilometres, briefly prompted the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center to issue a tsunami alert for Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Thailand. Once the danger of a Tsunami seemed minimul, the Tsunami warning for Indonesia was lifted.

The 7.6 Earthquake, off the coast of Western Indonesia caused substantial damage as buildings toppled and bridges collapsed as residents of Indonesia were sent fleeing for safety.

Witnesses of the Indonesia Earthquake of September 30, 2009 said people ran out of homes and buildings in fear when the Indonesia Earthquake hit in the early evening. Tremors from the September 30 2009 Indonesia Earthquake were felt in the capital of Jakarta as well as in Singapore and Malaysia.

Video footage of the Indonesia Earthquake showed devastation, with piles of rubble and smashed houses in Sumatra. The Indonesia Earthquake has also caused widespread power and phone line outages, according to Indonesian officials. Several injuries are being reported however, it is unclear if there were any deaths, as a result of the Indonesian Earthquake.

Several buildings have reportedly collapsed in the coastal city of Padang in the Southern Sumatra province as well as in other town and cities.

Geologists have long said Padang, with a population of 900,000, may one day be destroyed by a huge earthquake because of its location.

Indonesia is a vast archipelago which straddles continental plates and is prone to Earthquake and Volcanic activity along what is known as the Pacific Ring of Fire. The Indonesia Earthquake was along the same fault line that spawned the massive December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people in a dozen countries.

Earlier this month, Indonesia was witness to another Earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale. This earthquake also caused substantial damage to the region.

Hours earlier, a tsunami had swept into Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga, killing at least 99 people after a strong underwater quake in the South Pacific.

Bridges collapsed in Sumatra, according to reports, cutting off the coastal area.

There were also reports that the tremor caused several water pipelines to break, causing flooding in streets.

It is not yet clear if the quake had any impact on the country's large oilfields and liquefied natural gas terminal, which are also based on Sumatra.

An Earthquake measuring 8.3 on the Richter scale struck in the Pacific off American Somoa this morning. The subsequent Tsunami is reported to have caused at least 14 deaths in American Samoa and neighbouring Islands as residents of the went clambering for higher ground as the Earthquake induced Tsunami thundered towards Somoa.

A Tsunami leaves residents searching through the mud

Somoa is no stranger to Earthquake and Tsunami activity. On March of 2009 this Volcanic Eruption off the coast of Tonga resulted in a Tsunami warning

Mase Akapo, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service, says the deaths occurred in four different villages on the main island of Tutuila, with six in the western area of Leone. An unspecified number of people also were killed in neighboring Samoa.

The American Somoa Earthquake hit the Pacific Ocean, off the cost of Somoa at 6:48 AM local time Tuesday. The epicentre of the Somoa Earthquake was midway between the two island groups. The U.S. Geological Service has estimated the magnitude of the Samoa Earthquake to be at least 8.0. The American Somoa Earthquake is said to have taken place 35 kilometers (20 miles ) below the ocean floor, 190 kilometers (120 miles) from American Samoa and 200 kilometers (125 miles) from Samoa, with a 5.6-magnitude aftershock which occured approximately 20 minutes after the main Earthquake off the coast of Somoa.

As a result of the earthquake off the coast of Somoa, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a Tsunami alert for the South Pacific region, from American Samoa to New Zealand. There are reported to be indications a tsunami wave could cause some severe destruction along some coastlines. Hawaii was put under a tsunami watch, and five emergency shelters were opened in preparation for the potential for a Tsunami to hit the Hawaiian Islands.

A five-foot tsunami wave, resulting from the Earthquake off the Coast of Somoa, quickly swept into Pago Pago, capital of American Samoa. The Tsunami came quickly after the earthquake, not leaving much time for the locals to respond. The wall of water surged onto the Island of Somoa for about 100 yards before receding. The resulting field of debris ad mud left vehicles stuck and caused wide spread electrical outages.

Tsunami Waves have the ability to reach great heights

The powerful Earthquake off the coast of American Somoa threw resident out of bed and was reported to have lasted at least 2 minutes "It's the strongest I have felt, and we ran outside. You could see all the trees and houses were shaking," a local person said over the radio.

Talking about the Tsunami Sulili Dusi told New Zealand's National Radio "everything dropped on the floor and we thought the house was going to go down as well. Thank God, it didn't." She said the tsunami hit the south side of the island, and some "cars have been taken." She did not elaborate, but added "we just thank God no life has been taken yet."

Police in the area's at risk for further Tsunami activity are sending everybody up to high ground. Local media said they had reports of some landslides in the Solosolo region of the main Samoan island of Upolu and damage to plantations in the countryside outside Apia.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu issued a tsunami warning for numerous islands in the Pacific, including the Samoas, the Cook Islands, Tonga, Fiji, New Zealand, French Polynesia and Palmyra Island. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also posted a tsunami watch for Hawaii, Vanuatu, the Marshall Islands, Solomon Island, Johnston Island, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Wake Island, Midway Island and Pitcairn.

In New Zealand, a tsunami alert was issued by national Civil Defense, and the nation's national emergency center was activated.

Flooding in Manila 106 Dead and Counting in Worst storm in 42 Years

Tropical Storm Ketsana is roaring through the Philippines and leaving chaos in its' wake. Philippine officials are reporting at least 106 people dead or missing as a result of the flooding in Manila.

Tropical Storm Ketsana battered the northern Philippines near Manila on Saturday, pouring torrential amounts of rain in just 12 hours consequently setting off the worst flooding in the Philippine capital in more than 42 years.

Philipino Woman finds safety from 2009 Manila Flood on Mattress

Philipine Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro reports army troops, police and civilian volunteers rescued more than 5,000 people - many of them were found feverishly holding onto each other as they sat on roofs and on top of buses after Tropical Storm Ketsana hit the Philipines on Saturday.

Among those dead as a result of Tropical Storm Ketsana, an Army soldier and four militiamen drowned while trying to rescue villagers in southern Laguna province.

Rescuers increased their efforts on Sunday as the skies over Manila started to clear and the rain started to let up.

The Philipine government declared a State of Emergency in metropolitan Manila and 25 storm-hit provinces, allowing Philipine officials to utilize emergency funds for the relief and rescue efforts over Tropical Storm Ketsana. Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro said.

Philipine Emergency workers are busy carrying bodies on makeshift stretchers in Marikina. One rescuer was seen lifting the small body of a child covered in mud.

Distress calls and e-mails from thousands of residents in metropolitan Manila and their worried relatives flooded TV and radio stations overnight.

Ketsana swamped entire towns, set off landslides and shut down Manila's airport for several hours.

Military Chief General Victor Ibrado, accompanied by journalists, flew over several suburban Manila towns on Sunday on board air force helicopters and saw many people still waiting to be rescued on roofs of their houses in flooded villages.

The sun shone briefly in Manila on Sunday and showed the extent of devastation in many neighborhoods - destroyed houses, overturned vans and cars, and streets and highways covered in debris and mud.

"The water was rolling and everything happened in a flash, every minute it was rising. So I said to myself if this reaches the second floor of our house then a lot of people here would die," said resident Ronald Manlangit after watching the flood water rapidly rise up the side of his home.

The 16.7 inches of rain that swamped metropolitan Manila in just 12 hours on Saturday exceeded the 15.4-inch average for September, Cruz said, adding that the rainfall broke the previous record of 13.2 inches in a 24-hour period in June 1967.

Rubbish-choked drains and waterways, along with high tide, compounded the problem, officials said.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo had to take an elevated commuter train to the disaster council office to preside over a meeting Saturday because roads were clogged by vehicles stuck in the floodwaters.

Ketsana, which packed winds of 53 miles per hour with gusts of up to 63 mph, hit land early on Saturday then roared across the main northern Luzon island toward the South China Sea.

Megan Fox, the Hostest with the mostest... or Hostess Twinkie if you like, hosted the season premiere of Saturday Night Live SNL last night. There was alot of hype leading up to Megan Fox's appearance on te season premiere of Saturday Night Live SNL and here is a collection of promo commercials for the appearance of Megan Fox on the Season Premiere of Saturday Night Live.

In the intro to the Season Premiere of Saturday Night Live, Megan Fox immediately jumped into the Naked Pictures of Megan Fox topic. RV 144 New AIDS VACCINE... or False Hope?

AIDS Researchers and stakeholders in the who AIDS epidemic are excited today about an announcement regarding an apparent advancement in HIV AIDS Research, particularly in the development of an HIV AIDS VACCINE known as RV 144.

many drug companies have attempted their own versions of an HIV/AIDS Vaccine but have since abandoned their trials as they found the AIDS VACCINES actually seemed to stimulate the spread of AIDS in trial patients. According to a trial on 16,395 Thai volunteers half minus 1 of whom were given the RV 144 HIV AIDS VACCINE while half plus one were given a placebo HIV AIDS VACCINE. Both groups in the RV 144 HIV AIDS VACCINE study were given condoms as well as counselling.

At the end of the Thai RV 144 HIV AIDS VACCINE study, 125 of the participants ended up getting AIDS, that is a .762423 % of the study group that caught the AIDS Virus. 0.622179 % of the Study group which received the RV 144 HIV AIDS VACCINE were infected while 0.902659 % of the Placebo group in the RV 144 HIV AIDS VACCINE trial became infected with HIV AIDS. This compared to the nearly 1.5% of the Thai population who were infected with the AIDS Virus in 1994 this RV 144 HIV AIDS VACCINE success statistic might look promising. However, one needs to look at the variables involved in this study of the RV 144 HIV AIDS VACCINE.

First of all, the 1.5% is a cummulative total in 1994. Secondly, and most importantly, all participants in this RV 144 HIV AIDS VACCINE study were given HIV/AIDS prevention education as well as condoms. So in actual fact, the success rate of the RV 144 HIV AIDS VACCINE is a mere 0.28 % reduction in the occurance of the AIDS VIRUS for the RV 144 HIV/AIDS VACCINE vs the Placebo control group. With such a small percentage success rate in the RV 144 AIDS VACCINE study, one needs to wonder what these scientists are thinking with all their excitement over the development of the RV 144 HIV/AIDS VACCINE.

All that being said, any development in an HIV AIDS VACCINE is a good thing and offers hope for those afflicted with the HIV/AIDS Virus. The thing is, one has to ask if this misguided hope will cause dangerous activities among those in the high risk group for developing HIV/AIDS. After all, a simple series of shots is a heck of alot more fun than wearing a sock in the shower. I guess my point is, when looking at the recent 2009 RV 144 HIV/AIDS VACCINE study, one needs to weigh all the facts before jumping up and down in excitement over a "cure" for HIV AIDS. In my mind, the only thing this study revealed is, there was a 1 % reduction in the occurance of HIV AIDS in those who were educated and provided with Condoms.

Mackenzie Phillips has come out with a new book and the Internet is a buzz searching for information on the daughter, and apparent sex partner, of John Phillips, the founding member of the Mama's and Papa's.

After getting busted for drug possession at LAX and the subsequent trip to rahab, Mackenzie Phillips seems to have had some sort of epiphany telling her to write a tell all book. Perhaps it was therapy, maybe it was a realization that the messed up life of Mackenzie Phillips would be something American's would want to read.... You know like watching a train wreck... The more blood and guts the better.

If it is blood and guts, of the literary kind, you are looking for, Mackenzie Phillips new tell all book, High on Arrival, will be sure to deliver. From drugs, childhood rape and having an ongoing sexual relationship with her father, John Phillips of the Mama's and Papa's this tell all book High on Arrival, from Mackenzie Phillips will surely shock at least some of us.

In her Tell all book "High On Arrival" Mackenzie Phillips (Daughter of John Phillips off the Mama's and Papa's) talks about coming out of a blackout and finding herself havings sex with her father, John Phillips. The incestual incident happened on the bight before her wedding to Jeff Sessler, son of Freddie Sessler, a longtime member of the Rolling Stones' entourage.

"On the eve of my wedding, my father showed up, determined to stop it, I had tons of pills, and Dad had tons of everything, too. Eventually I passed out on Dad's bed. My father was not a man with boundaries. He was full of love, and he was sick with drugs. I woke up that night from a blackout to find myself having sex with my own father. Had this happened before? I didn't know. All I can say is it was the first time I was aware of it. For a moment I was in my body, in that horrible truth, and then I slid back into a blackout."

Following a life of drug addiction, Mackenzie Phillips' father John Phillips died in 2001.

A main character in the 80's TV show "One Day at a Time" which she starred in with Valerie Bertinelli, author of her own tell all book and fellow ex-drug hag. Mackenzie Phillips was eventually fired from "One Day at a Time," as a result of her drug problems.

After her firing from One Day at a Time, Mackenzie Phillips entered rehab with her father. During their stint in rehab, and as Mackenzie and John Phillips struggled with their addictions, the affair between Mackenzie Phillips and her father John Phillips became consensual.

At one point, John Phillips even suggested they run away together so they could continue their relationship "One night, Dad said, 'We could just run away to a country where no one would look down on us. There are countries where this is an accepted practice. Maybe Fiji." says Mackenzie Phillips about her father John Phillips. "He was completely delusional. 'No,' I thought, 'we're going to hell for this.' "

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey airing today, Mackenzie Phillips tells the world it was her father who first introduced her to the drugs which eventually led to her having sex with him. "My father shot me up for the first time, I remember going into my room, I was crouched on the floor. He put the needle in my arm and put the plunger in and he missed, he missed the vein and my whole arm went numb."

In addition to One Day at a Time, Mackenzie Phillips also starred in "American Graffiti" and, more recently, on the Disney Channel show "So Weird." Mackenzie Phillips also made guest appearances on the TV series "7th Heaven,"

Severe rain followed by overfloawing rivers and flash flooding is wreaking havoc in flood ridden north western and central Georgia. Many in Georgia are calling this recent flooding a "100-year storm". Levee's have broken all over the state causing many neighbourhoods in Georgia to be covered in water.

Six Flags over Georgia is currently flooded, to the point where some portions of the roller coaster tracks have disappeared under brown, murky flood water.

More than 1,500 residents of Trion Georgia were evacuated after rising flood waters in that region of Georgia breached a levee causing backyards and roads to disapear under the floodwaters in Trion Georgia.

This slow moving storm is expected to bring severe rainfall in the Georgia region for a few days as rescue crews work feverishly to pull both the survivors and those who have perished from the Georgia Flood waters. At this time, the Georgia and surrounding region has seen as much as 21 inches of rain from storms stretching from Tennessee to Georgia to North Carolina.

The mass flooding in Carrol County Georgia has already claimed at least six lives with at least another six reporting missing in the floodwaters of Caroll County Georgia. Among the dead is a 2 year old boy who was swept out of his fathers arms while the father was trying to carry his son to safety amidst the rushing currents of flood water in Carrol County Georgia.

At this time, there is no report of the government declaring a state of Emergency in flood riden Carrol County Georgia. However, with 21 inches of rain and counting, President Obama should be declaring a state of emergency and dispatching the National guard at any time now.

The storm is currently stretching from Tennessee to Georgia to North Carolina causing severe rainfall and mass flooding in the region, particularly Carrol Country Georgia, which is currently on the top of searches regarding the flooding in Georgia. The storm is currently covering area's around Dalton and Rome Georgia as well as Chattanooga, Tennessee and Gadsden Alabama.

In addition to those missing and dead in Carrol County Georgia, one person is missing and presumed dead in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue pleaded with residents to stay off the roads, "Stuff is important, but it's not nearly as important as your life," he said. "Please give these waters time to recede."

In related news, President Barack Obama declared the United States is a now a "serious partner in combating global warming" Speaking to other World leaders in a UN Climate summit, Obama stated "We understand the gravity of the climate threat. We are determined to act," Obama said. And we will meet our responsibility to future generations." Obama further went on to say "The journey is hard. And we don't have much time left to make it,"

With the current developments in Northern Georgia and Alabama as well as southern Tennessee, critics of Obama will be hard pressed to find anyone who dies not see the importance in dealing with Global climate change.

YALE KILLER of ANNIE LE may be Lab Technician

Police investigating the Yale Murder of Annie Le to a Lab Technician who is now suspected of being the YALE KILLER.

When Annie Le disapeared last week, authorities dismissed it as a voluntary thing.

This was until Yale Video Surveillance showed Annie Le entering a building but not leaving. Police then brought in search dogs and the Murdered Body of Annie Le was found in a cable chase.

So far, the evidence pointing towards the Lab Technician as the Yale Killer are the filaing of a polygraph test and defensive wounds on his chest. Police are hoping the bloddied clothing found in the ceiling of the building lead them to the identity of the Yale Killer responsible for the Murder of Yale Student Annie Le.

Suzanne Jovin - Victim of 1998 YALE STABBING MURDER

There has been no indication of a connection between the murder of Annie Le and the 1998 Murder of 21 year old Suzanne Jovin. Initialliy, Suzanne Jovin's thesis advisor, James Van de Velde was suspected as the Yale Killer of 1998, however, he was subsequently removed as a suspect and awarded $80,000 by the University for being expelled as a result of the investigation into the, yet unsolved, murder of Suzanne Jovin.

Some stupid reporters decided to take it up themselves to contact the Father of Suzanne Jovin, with regard to this recent Yale Murder and the Yale Murder of his daughter. Of course, he refused to comment.

US Tennis player Serena Williams is top of Google's Search Trends, not because of her Foot Fault during yesterday's US Open Final match against Kim Clijsters, but because of how Serena Williams reacted to the call.

By the looks of the Serena Williams Youtube Video of the US Open match, the lines woman looks quite afraid of Serena Williams and her apparent "Death threat". Yup, in addition to cursing out the Lines woman with several

US Open September 2009

unintelligible insults, Serena Williams reportedly told the Lines woman who called the Foot fault "I would Kill you"

When approached by the ref, Serena Williams responded "I'm sorry but alot of people have done alot worse." When the topic of the death threat came up, Serena Williams got quite vocal and said "Are you Kidding me?" After a few heated words, Serena Williams slammed her racket on the ground and stormed towards Kim Clijsters motioning for Kim to meet her at the net. Serena Williams then shook Kim Clijsters' have and walked away while discussing her thoughts on the foot fault call made against her.

Whatever Serena Williams said to the Lines woman during her US open Match against Kim Clijsters is now on tape. You can watch and listen to the US Open footage of the Serena Williams Foot Fault call for yourself on the Serena Williams Foot Fault Youtube Video below.

Not being a Tennis aficionado, I had to look up what a foot fault was. So here you go, from the book of Tennis rules, the definition of a Foot Fault in Tennis.

8. Foot Fault
The Server shall throughout the delivery of the Service:
a. Not change his position by walking or running. The Server shall not by slight movement of the feet which do not materially affect the location originally taken up by him, be deemed "to change his position by walking or running".
b. Not touch, with either foot, any area other than that behind the base-line within the imaginary extensions of the centre-mark and side-lines.

USTA Comment: The key to understanding this rule is to realize that the Server's feet must be at rest immediately before beginning to serve. Immediately thereafter, the delivery of the service begins with any arm or racket motion, and ends when the racket contacts the ball (or misses the ball in attempt to strike it).

If either foot touches the Court, including the baseline, or the imaginary extension of a line specified in Rule 8b. after his feet are at rest but before he strikes the ball, he has committed a foot fault.
There can be no foot fault if the Server does not attempt to strike at the ball. As long as the Server makes no attempt to strike at the ball, it is immaterial whether he catches it in his hand or his racket or lets it drop to the ground.

USTA Comment: This rule covers the most decisive stroke in the game, and there is no justification for its not being obeyed by players and enforced by officials. No official has the right to instruct any umpire to disregard violations of it. In a non-officiated match, the Receiver, or his partner, may call foot faults after all efforts (appeal to the server, request for an umpire, etc.) have failed and the foot faulting is so flagrant as to be clearly perceptible from the Receiver's side.

It is improper for any official to warn a player that he is in danger of having a foot fault called on him. On the other hand, if a player asks for an explanation of how he foot faulted, either the Line Umpire or the Chair Umpire should give him that information.

So the rules and evidence is in front of you... What do you think? Have your say on the Serena Williams Foot Fault call below.

Erin Andrews Peephole Video - The Oprah Interview

Speaking on what she called the first and last time she would be talking about the subject, ESPN Sportscaster Erin Andrews spoke with Oprah Winfrey on the whole Leaked Erin Andrews Peephole Video scandal. "I just felt like I was continuing to be victimized. I did nothing wrong" said Erin Andrews, the subject of the Peephole Video which was recorded in several hotel rooms without her knowledge.

Recalling the first time she saw the Leaked peephole video of herself naked, Erin Andrews said "It's been a nightmare, I opened up the computer [and] could feel my heart pounding."

Erin Andrews vividly remembers feeling as if her career was over when she phoned her parents after first seeing the peep hole video of herself naked in a hotel room "... they - they thought I was physically injured how bad I was screaming."

The peephole video first appeared on search engine trends back in February but did not catch anyone's attention until someone speculated the subject of the peephole video looked alot like Erin Andrews. Rumours soon started to fly and the Erin Andrews Peephole Video was at the top of Google for 2 to 3 weeks in July.

Since the discovery of the Erin Andrews Peephole Video, reps for Erin Andrews have been trying feverishly to stop the spread of the actual Erin Andrews Peephole video. There are, however, several copies of the Erin Andrews Peephole Video available for download through BitTorrent or RapidShare. Those looking for a quick peek at some screenshots of the Erin Andrews Peephole video can see them here

I know it can be quite traumatic for Erin Andrews being the subject of a Naked Hoitel Room Peephole Video. I have no doubt Erin Andrews did feel quite violated when she first saw the Peephole Video of herself surface on the Internet. The thing is, prior to this whole Peephole Video thing, Erin Andrews was a fairly localised sports celebrity.

Fact of the matter is, I did not even know who she was nor did millions of people overseas. To look at the positive side of a bad thing, this Erin Andrews Peephole Video has boosted the career of Erin Andrews. Yes, it may have been embarrasing, however, as Erin Andrews said - She did nothing wrong. There is nothing slutty happening in the Erin Andrews Peephole Video... She is just getting ready for work. Peeping Tom illegalities aside, my suggestion is, Erin Andrews should take this whole Peephole Video scandal as the publicity career boosting opportunity it is. The simple fact that Erin Andrews Peephole Video is at the top of Google, yet again, indicates Erin Andrews is a hot commodity. Perhaps deserving of a raise for the publicity she is getting for ESPN.

Oh ya, for those who don't have a clue. You will not find the Erin Andrews Peephole Video on YOUTUBE. They have a policy against nudity.... let alone the legal aspect.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President Barack Obama's special adviser for green jobs, VAN JONES, has resigned under pressure from leading Republican politicians and revelations about his controversial past statements.

VAN JONES, a former civil rights activist from California, had been working for the White House Council on Environmental Quality since March. "I am resigning my post at the Council on Environmental Quality, effective today," VAN JONES said in a statement released by the White House Saturday. VAN JONES went on to say that on the eve of historic fights for health care and clean energy, "opponents of reform have mounted a vicious smear campaign" against him and that he had essentially become a distraction for the Obama administration. "They are using lies and distortions to distract and divide," he continued. "But I came here to fight for others, not for myself. I cannot in good conscience ask my colleagues to expend precious time and energy defending or explaining my past. We need all hands on deck, fighting for the future."

Council on Environmental Quality chair Nancy Sutley issued a statement saying she accepted VAN JONES' resignation. "Over the last six months he has been a strong voice for creating 21st century jobs that improve energy efficiency and utilize renewable resources. We appreciate his hard work and wish him the best moving forward," Sutley said.

VAN JONES became the focus of public attention last week when it was revealed he had signed a petition that questioned whether officials in the administration of former president George W. ALLIGATOR GAR among many "Monster Fish" found in Hong Kong Ponds

HONG KONG (AFP) - Hong Kong has launched a search of ponds in public parks after at least 16 fish of an exotic species that can grow up to three metres (10 feet) long were discovered, apparently dumped by their owners when they grew too big.

A metre-long alligator gar was caught Friday in a park pond after reports that visitors feared for their safety, the South China Morning Post reported on Saturday. The fierce-looking creatures get their name from their long snout, which resembles that of an alligator. While they are an aggressive and carnivorous species, they are not known to attacks humans. Native to North America, alligator gars are commonly sold in Hong Kong for home aquariums when they are less than 30 centimetres (one foot) long but can grow to three metres and weigh up to 140 kilograms (300 pounds).

Another 15 of the fish had been found in ponds and lakes at other parks across Hong Kong, the Post said. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department said in a statement late Friday the species had no conservation value and would affect the local ecology if released into the wild. "Staff will clean the lakes regularly. Dangerous fishes will be removed when they are found," it said. It said it would offer non-dangerous fish to animal welfare groups and charities if they were willing to take them. The Aligator Gar caught Friday died later that day. The department warned that people who dumped unwanted pet fish in public parks risked a 2,000-dollar (260-US dollar) fine and two weeks in jail.
