Miami Dade School Closures due to Hurricane

The new school year in Miami Dade and Broward will not start as planned on Monday thanks to Tropical Storm Fay.

Miami Dade School district spokesman John Shuster says because high winds and heavy rain from Tropical Storm Fay will affect South Florida on Monday, all public schools and adult education centers will be closed. All athletic events, practices and extra curricular activities have also been cancelled. All school site and non-school site Managerial Exempt Personnel will report to work on Monday. All other employees, including instructional and non-instructional staff, should report to work on if they are directed to do so by their immediate supervisor.

A decision about whether schools be closed on Tuesday will be made on Monday.

Broward public school officials have also cancelled all classes on Monday; they will make a decision about Tuesday on Monday afternoon.

During a news conference Sunday, Miami Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez said we could be feeling the winds and rain bands associated with Tropical Storm Fay by Monday afternoon.

Alvarez said all county government offices should be open on Monday. Miami International Airport and the Port of Miami will remain open until sustained winds reach 39 mph.

Alvarez urged everyone to be prepared to protect their homes and belongings. Those who are planning to evacuate should have a plan and know where they are going.

Alvarez said the best thing everyone can do in this circumstance is to "be smart and stay informed."

The University of Miami will hold regularly scheduled classes on Monday.

Classes will resume at Florida International University's law school on Monday. Most classes are not scheduled to begin until later in the week.

Monroe County schools will also be closed Monday and Tuesday for all students and staff.

Monroe County Schools Superintendent Randy Acevedo notified parents and staff Sunday at 10:30 a.m. using the ConnectEd phone notification system and the Monroe County School District website.

Students and parents can go to the Broward County Public Schools website for more information on when classes will resume. Information will also be made available on the rumor control hotline. That number is 754-321-0321.

The Miami-Dade County Public Schools website has more information about this week's school closures.
