10 Car Accident on NJ TURNPIKE Kills 5

A 10-vehicle crash on the New Jersey Turnpike has killed five people and injured several others, officials said. Joe Orlando, Turnpike Authority spokesman, said it appears that nine cars and a tractor-trailer were involved in the fiery crash yesterday afternoon in the turnpike's southbound lanes in Mount Laurel, a Philadelphia suburb. Orlando said all those killed were in one car. The turnpike is one of the nation's most heavily trafficked highways.

A multivehicle crash on the New Jersey Turnpike killed five people and injured several others on Saturday afternoon.

Turnpike Authority spokesman Joe Orlando said it appeared that nine cars and a tractor-trailer were involved in the crash, which occurred in the southbound lanes near milepost 35 in Mount Laurel, just north of Interchange 4.

All those killed were in one car, which Orlando said burst into flames during the crash. But it was not immediately known if they died from injuries sustained in the accident or the fire.

The crash, which occurred shortly after 1 p.m., caused major traffic delays in the area, and southbound traffic was diverted at Interchange 7A for several hours.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
