HOTMAIL PASSWORDS LIST FROM PASTEBIN.COM

COMPLETE LIST OF HOTMAIL EMAIL PASSWORDS

Hotmail users are being encouraged to change their passwords today as at least 10,000 @Hotmail.com, @MSN.com and @live.com have been leaked on www.postbin.com, a website used for software developers to share their code.







Although the LIST OF LEAKED HOTMAIL PASSWORDS has since been removed from postbin.com, there are some unconfirmed reports that the passwords seem to primarily be consisting of @Hotmail.com, @MSN.com and @live.com Email accounts starting with the letters A and B. Logic, however, dictates if someone did manage to obtain a list of 10,000 @Hotmail.com, @MSN.com and @live.com accounts, there are most likely more leaked @Hotmail.com, @MSN.com and @live.com Email passwords out there waiting for people to download the list of hacked @Hotmail.com, @MSN.com and @live.com Email passwords.





Microsoft is currently investigating the leak of these 10,000 @Hotmail.com, @MSN.com and @live.com passwords and hopes to find out how a list of so many @Hotmail.com, @MSN.com and @live.com Email passwords ended up on postbin.com.

Postbin.com has since removed the list of @Hotmail.com, @MSN.com and @live.com Email passwords and they do not seem to have made it into Google's search cache by the time they were discovered. This, however, is not to say the leaked list of @Hotmail.com, @MSN.com and @live.com passwords will not appear somewhere else anytime soon.





This is not the first time Email passwords for @hotmail.com have been at risk. For several years already, there have been detailed instructions on HOW TO HACK HOTMAIL EMAIL PASSWORDS posted in various locations online. As we already know, the Internet is a vast resource of information and Hackers do seem to make it their lifes' goal to illegally obtain this information. Perhaps hacking the @Hotmail.com, @MSN.com and @live.com Email passwords and posting the list of the @Hotmail.com, @MSN.com and @live.com Email passwords on Postbin.com created some bragging rights, in the mind of the hacker who hacked into @Hotmail.com, @MSN.com and @live.com Email passwords.

GOOGLE VOICE - Sign up and get your own GOOGLE PHONE NUMBER

GOOGLE will be launching their very own VOIP type service known as GOOGLE VOICE. This service will allow GOOGLE VOICE members to obtain their very own GOOGLE VOICE PHONE NUMBER from Google Voice which would expand on existing Google Chat features.

according to rumors, Google Voice will give Google Voice members a Google Voice Mail box which would enable friends from all over the world to leave messages. Rumors also indicate a rich offering of features from Google Voice which would include Call forwarding of your Google Voice calls to any phone around the world. Details on the cost of Google Voice are not available at this time, however Google Voice is a service currently going through testing via GrandCentral, a company Google purchased awhile back.

Apparently, GOOGLE VOICE has already purchased 1 Million phone numbers from a provisioning company to test out the many features of GOOGLE VOICE.

IBM - SUN MICROSYSTEMS MERGER

I.B.M. is in talks to buy Sun Microsystems in a proposed deal valued at nearly $7 billion, a person with knowledge of the negotiations said on Wednesday.

The merger, if completed, would be a major consolidation in the market for server computers used in corporate data centers — and one that could prompt an antitrust challenge.

For I.B.M., the move would be something of a departure from its successful strategy of paring its dependence on the hardware business, where profit margins have declined, and increasing its investment in higher-margin software and services businesses.

But the combination of I.B.M. and Sun, analysts say, would bring together two technology companies that have continued to invest heavily in research and development, when many of their corporate peers have cut back to shield profits. I.B.M.’s research and development budget is about $6 billion a year, while Sun’s is roughly $3 billion.







I.B.M. has spent generously on research at a time it is thriving. Sun, however, has struggled financially, and its high operating costs, including research and development, have been criticized by Wall Street analysts.

The proposed price for Sun is worth roughly $10 a share. At midday Sun’s stock was up $4.10, or 82 percent, to $9.01.

If its bid for Sun succeeds, the deal would be the largest in I.B.M.’s history. The company has mostly shunned costly purchases, preferring instead to engineer a series of smaller deals to fill in technologically strategic niches in its software business or add to its skills in services.

To date, I.B.M.’s largest acquisitions were the $4.9 billion it paid for Cognos, a business intelligence software company, in 2008, and the $3.9 billion it paid for PricewaterhouseCoopers in 2002, which greatly enlarged Big Blue’s services business.

News of the talks between the two companies was first reported by The Wall Street Journal. I.B.M. would not comment. Sun’s chairman, Scott McNealy, said in an e-mail message: “As always, I don’t comment on rumors, no matter how accurate or silly they may be.”

In Sun, I.B.M. would be picking up a company with a heritage of innovation not only in hardware, but also in software. Sun created both the Solaris operating system, a version of Unix, and the Java Internet programming language and software tools. Java is the teaching language in most of computer science, and software programs written in Java are widely used in everything from corporate data centers to cellphones.








An estimated one million software developers write applications on Sun’s software platforms, while I.B.M. vast software business claims eight million developers in its camp. I.B.M. has been a big supporter of Java, and both companies are backers of the open-source Linux operating system, a rival to Microsoft’s Windows in data centers and on some desktop personal computers. In 2008, Sun increased its commitment to open-source software by paying roughly $1 billion for MySQL, a company distributing an open-source database that is widely used in Web commerce sites.

But unlike I.B.M., Sun has found it difficult to enlarge its software business enough to take over as a growth engine from its hardware business. Late last year, two people with knowledge of the talks said, Sun began meeting with representatives of other technology companies about selling itself.

Sun has strong ties to large customer groups that appeal to I.B.M., like telecommunications companies and government agencies.

Sun, under Mr. McNealy and its chief executive, Jonathan Schwartz, has held onto its heritage of innovation and research in recent years. But that commitment has held back its profits, and the spending has been frequently criticized by Wall Street analysts.

Even today, Sun’s gross profit margins are more than 40 percent, but its operating profits have been close to zero in recent years, said A. M. Sacconaghi, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein.

“I.B.M. should be able to improve the margins, given the overlap in businesses and overhead expenses in these two companies,” he said.

I.B.M. could add the MySQL technology, which is popular with Internet companies, to its own DB2 database and gain a larger share of one of the most lucrative parts of the software market.

In addition, Sun has tried to revitalize its storage line through new software and hardware — both of which would help I.B.M. compete against H.P. and EMC.

I.B.M. would inherit Sun’s networking technology, including a new line of switches. That technology looks more crucial following Cisco Systems’ entry this week into the server market and H.P.’s decision to invest more in its networking technology. Cisco acquired I.B.M.’s networking business in 1999. But by acquiring Sun, I.B.M. would also be making a big investment in a business — computer servers — that has not shown much overall growth in recent years, and must withstand the relentless force of commoditizing cost pressure in the hardware market.

I.B.M. sold its personal computer business to Lenovo of China for $1.75 billion in 2005, and its hard-disk drive business to Hitachi of Japan for $2.05 billion in 2003.

In the server market, the I.B.M. move seems to be a straightforward consolidation tactic, and one that could bring antitrust scrutiny.

Together, I.B.M. and Sun would have about 65 percent of the market for server computers running the Unix operating system and 42 percent of the total server market, measured in the dollar value of the market.

In the Unix market, there would really be only one other significant competitor, H.P.

Still, the recent volume growth in the server market has come mainly in machines run by lower-cost microprocessors, made by Intel and Advanced Micro Devices, using personal computer technology.

The key antitrust issue in reviewing the proposed deal, legal experts say, will be how regulators define the server market. If the market is viewed as including technology beyond Unix servers, the antitrust hurdle will be considerably lower, they said.









"The credit cards and the banks have certainly put in technology where things are not as easily taken as they once were - they're constantly evolving as technology progresses whereas Bell is not," said Leah May, officer manager at law firm Martin and Hillyer in Burlington, Ont. "They're just forcing victims to pay for it, and where's the consequence to them?"





Bell Canada's 38-page bill to May's firm was for more than $207,000 worth of calls to Sierra Leone. Bell offered to halve the amount. "That's just not good enough," May said. "We're screaming out loud that we've been victimized." Phone companies maintain customers must ensure their phone systems are protected from what Bell calls "experienced criminals." "Remember that you are responsible for paying for all calls originating from, and charged calls accepted at, your telephone, regardless of who made or accepted them," Bell vice-president Peter Kerr wrote to lawyer John Ford in Oakville, Ont., this month.

In Oakville, GPS Consulting Group and Insurance Agencies had its Bell-installed system hacked to the tune of $76,000 for calls to Austria - even after following advice to change voice-mail passwords. Bell initially said it would take $60,400 but eventually agreed to accept $7,100 after threatening to cut off the lines. That's still too much, said the firm's Gord Cowan. "It's anguish. It's cost us thousands and thousands of dollars of time fighting this," said Cowan, who wants the legislation changed. "These small companies, through a federally regulated company, are being brought to their knees. They'll put us out of business."

Microsoft has yet to comment on what is causing massive numbers of its 30GB Zune to fail virtually simultaneously
There have been some mysteries in the technology world over 2008. It seems that the last day of the year will end on another mysterious note for technology fans and Microsoft Zune owners.

According to Gizmodo there are massive amounts of reports of 30GB Microsoft Zune players failing around the country. The proximity to the New Year has led the phenomenon to be dubbed the Y2K9 bug, though the failures actually having anything to do with a calendar issue is slim. Mostly the slim chances have to do with the fact that the calendar won’t change until midnight tonight on the players and the first reports of failures starting coming in at about 2 a.m. this morning.

The failure goes something like this according to reports. At about 2 a.m. 30GB Zune's that were reset or were tuned off failed when they were started back up. The failure is described by those affected as a freeze at the load screen.





According to reports this isn’t a few 30GB Zune's that have failed, the vast majority of the devices have the same exact failure symptoms and have been reports by hundreds of owners according to Gizmodo. At this point little is known as to what is causing the mass failures of the devices. Once Microsoft is up and running for the workday, perhaps we will get more information on the issue.

73,000 SONY VAIO LAPTOP's RECALLED due to OVERHEATING and BURN HAZARD

Sony is recalling 73,000 Vaio TZ laptops because of a possible manufacturing defect that may cause them to overheat, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday.

The recall relates to a problem with wiring near the computer's hinge, which could short-circuit and overheat in certain circumstances, perhaps burning the user.

One person has suffered a minor burn as a result of the latest defect, and Sony has received 15 other reports of overheating computers, according to the Commission.

The affected models are the VGN-TZ100, VGN-TZ200, VGN-TZ300 and VGN-TZ2000 -- although not all laptops in these series are affected. Sony suggests users contact the company to see whether their computer is part of the recall, and if so to stop using it immediately.

The overheating could be caused by misplaced wiring near the hinge, or if a screw in the hinge falls out and short-circuits the wires.

In 2006, Sony was forced to recall millions of laptop batteries used in its own and other manufacturers' laptops because they presented a fire hazard, causing some computers to burst into flames.

Further battery problems prompted Sony, Dell and Hewlett-Packard to issue another recall in August last year, with Acer following suit in April this year with a recall of 27,000 laptops batteries containing Sony-made cells.

The Commission has published one other laptop safety recall this year: In May, Dell recalled almost one million notebook electrical adapters because of a risk of fire and electric shock.

Polyworld - New Cross platform creations attempts Artificial Intelligence

A little out of my relm as far as geekspeak, but there seems to be a demand for info on PolyWorld out there.

Polyworld is a cross-platform (Linux, Mac OS X) program written by Larry Yaeger to evolve Artificial Intelligence through natural selection and evolutionary algorithms.





It shows a graphical environment using the Qt graphics toolkit and OpenGL, in which exists a population of trapezoid agents which search for food, mate, have offspring, and prey on each other. Typically the population is only in the hundreds, as each individual is rather complex and the environment consumes considerable computer resources. The graphical environment is necessary since the individuals actually move around the 2-D plane and the occasional barrier and must be able to “see.” Since some basic abilities like eating carcasses or randomly generated food, seeing other individuals, mating or fighting with them etc. are possible, a number of interesting behaivours have been observed to spontaneously arise after prolonged evolution, such as cannibalism, predators and prey, and mimicry.





Each individual makes decisions based on a neural net using Hebbian learning; the neural net is derived from each individual’s genome. The genome does not merely specify the wiring and weighting of the neurel nets, but also determines their size, speed, color, mutation rate and a number of other factors. The genome is randomly mutated at a set probability, and are also changed in descendant organisms.

Now here is a cool invention The Air Scooter Home Helicopter, was invented by Elwood Norris and presented for the first time in San Francisco in March 2004, this recreational helicopter meets US ultralight requirements, so it doesn't require registration and can be flown without a pilot's license. This incredible machine is on the market right now for less than $50.000. It uses motorcycle-style handlebars command and the altitude is control with a gear shift.
It can fly for two hours on one tank of gas and can fly at 55 Miles per hour up to 10,000 feet above sea level. Amazing considering you do not need a licence to fly the Air Scooter.

Microsoft unveils Windows Mobile 6.1 with loads of new features

Microsoft has unveiled the rumoured update to its mobile phone operating system with the announcement of Windows Mobile 6.1.

Microsoft says Windows Mobile 6.1 will help people stay better connected to the individuals and information they need most, anywhere and anytime.

Its features will make for "simpler smartphones" with quick phone setup with a "Getting Started Centre", one-tap Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and tools for better socialisation such as threaded SMS and easier email management.

The other big change, as we previously reported, is a much more "intuitive" experience and a new homescreen design.

Microsoft says updates and new phones are expected to be available beginning in the second quarter of 2008.

The software giant also revealed that they are to offer a new and improved browsing experience for mobile users, with a "desktop-grade" experience promised for Windows Mobile phones thanks to an upcoming version of Internet Explorer Mobile.

IE Mobile will be available to mobile phone partners in the third quarter of 2008 with the first Windows Mobile phones using the new version to be available by the end of 2008.

Confirmed new Windows Mobile phones partners include: Alltel Wireless, AT&T Inc., ASUS, HP, HTC Corp., Intermec Inc., Motorola Inc., Orange, O2, Palm Inc., Pantech Group, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, Spring, T-Mobile USA Inc., T-Mobile International, T-Mobile Germany, TELUS, Toshiba, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone.

Adobe Release Free online photo editing application

Adobe has released its Photoshop Express web-based imaging application as a public beta. Photoshop Express uses much of Adobe's image editing technology and has been repurposed as a web-based application.

Users can store up to 2GB of images online for free, make edits to their photos and share them online. Photoshop Express also allows users to download and upload photos from popular social networking sites like Facebook.

The application provides 'standard edits', such as removing blemishes and red-eye, converting to black and white, cropping and resizing.

Photoshop Express also offers tricks like Pop Color which selects an object in an image, mutes the background colour of the photo and allows the user to swap the object's colour so that it "jumps off the page".

Sketch effects make photos look like drawings, and a Distort feature allows users to distort facial features or objects for a comical or artistic effect.

Adobe said that even users with limited photo editing knowledge can simply select what looks best from a line-up of sample photos with visual hints showing different variations of the added effect.

During the public beta period, Adobe will solicit user feedback on product features and functionality which will "continue to evolve over time".

"Photoshop is trusted technology that has changed the visual landscape of our world," said Doug Mack, vice president of consumer and hosted solutions at Adobe.

"Now Photoshop Express allows anyone who snaps a digital photo to easily achieve the high-impact results for which Adobe is known."

Facebook not as secure as one might think

Recently, a flaw in the design of face book has exposed millions of so called "Private" photo libraries to the view of anyone who wants to search.

Record numbers of people are posting intimate details about their lives online, despite warnings from privacy campaigners that photographs are extremely difficult to erase once uploaded to the internet. Even Paris Hilton had some previously private photo's leaked through the facebook security problem

Byron Ng, a computer technician from Vancouver, began looking for flaws in the site's security after an upgrade last week purportedly gave Facebook's 40 million users greater control over the way they shared material such as photographs with their friends.

Byron found he was able to pull up recent pictures posted by Facebook users, even if the owners intended them only to be seen by a select group of friends.

In related news, many want ban companies from trawling websites such as Facebook to gain access about potential employees, in a process known as "digital dirt-digging".

The Information Commissioner's Office recently reiterated its warning about the risk of posting details on social networking sites after a study found that the amount of information stored about us on the web will grow by a factor of ten between now and 2011.

In a statement acknowledging the security flaw, a Facebook spokesman said: "We take privacy very seriously and continue to make enhancements to the site.”

In June last year, Facebook was forced to update its privacy settings after it was revealed that certain information about users - such as their sexual preference and religious beliefs - could be ascertained by searching the site.

Oregon Man victim of Craigslist Hoax

JACKSONVILLE, Ore. — A pair of hoax ads on Craigslist cost an Oregon man much of what he owned.

The ads popped up Saturday afternoon, saying the owner of a Jacksonville home was forced to leave the area suddenly and his belongings, including a horse, were free for the taking, said Jackson County sheriff's Detective Sgt. Colin Fagan.

But Robert Salisbury had no plans to leave. The independent contractor was at Emigrant Lake when he got a call from a woman who had stopped by his house to claim his horse.

On his way home he stopped a truck loaded down with his work ladders, lawn mower and weed eater.

"I informed them I was the owner, but they refused to give the stuff back," Salisbury said. "They showed me the Craigslist printout and told me they had the right to do what they did."

The driver sped away after rebuking Salisbury. On his way home he spotted other cars filled with his belongings.

Once home he was greeted by close to 30 people rummaging through his barn and front porch.

The trespassers, armed with printouts of the ad, tried to brush him off. "They honestly thought that because it appeared on the Internet it was true," Salisbury said. "It boggles the mind."

Jacksonville police and Jackson County sheriff's deputies arrived but by then several cars packed with Salisbury's property had fled.

He turned some license plate numbers over to police.

Michelle Easley had seen the ad that claimed Salisbury's horse had been declared abandoned by the sheriff's department and was free to a good home.

"I can't stand to see a horse suffer so I drove out there and got her," Easley said. "The horse didn't look abandoned. She is in good shape for being 32 years old."

But it looked odd, so she left a note on Salisbury's door explaining the ad. She then decided to call to make sure the ad was legitimate when the second similar ad appeared.

"I feel bad because I was a part of it," Easley said. "It felt right to call the police."

Fagan praised Easley's honestly but said prosecution was likely for anybody caught with Salisbury's property.

Items can be returned with no questions asked, Fagan said.

Detectives have contacted Craigslist's legal team to try to trace the ad.

Meanwhile, Salisbury could not even relax on his porch swing.

Someone took it.

New development in Coffee for the rich coffee geek

When I read, single cup cofffe maker, my immediate response was... "That's not new" Then I read. Wow, this is definately a serious toy for the coffee geek

The New York Times used words like "cult object," "majestic," and "titillating"; the Economist called it "ingenious" and "sleek." The subject of these encomiums is, incongruously, a commercial coffee machine -- the Clover 1s, an $11,000 device that brews regular coffee (not espresso) one cup at a time. Could the Clover represent that much of an advance in the state of the coffee art? I had to try it for myself.

I convinced the manufacturer, Coffee Equipment Company, to send me a demo model, but they didn't tell me, until the machine was already en route to my apartment, that it requires a fist-sized 30-amp commercial electric outlet. So that option didn't work out: The crated-up machine and a massive grinder sat tantalizingly unused in my building for a week, then went back. Fortunately, David Latourell, a company representative who flew from Seattle to meet with me, had pull at Cafe Grumpy, a Manhattan cafe that owns two of the machines. After hours, as the last customers finished their cups and left, the long-haired, fast-talking Seattleite and I wedged ourselves behind Grumpy's coffee bar, and I had my chance to play with a Clover at last.

The Clover is so eyebrowraisingly expensive because it's not mass-produced: Each device is built to order by a small Seattle company. It brews coffee like a French press, but it's more dramatic to watch and much more precise. Unlike lesser methods of making coffee, which are no more reliable than their users and can't be counted on to produce the same cup twice, the Clover is equipped with a "PID algorithm" for regulating temperature and "programmable workflow modes" to help micromanage the brewing process. Latourell enumerates six variables that contribute to the taste of brewed coffee --choice of bean, grind, "dose" of coffee, brewing time, temperature, and amount of water. The first three, for better or worse, are in the hands of the barista ("Call me when you get a better grinder!" Latourell half-teases the Grumpy staff ) -- but the Clover can precisely regulate the last three.

The faceplate of the Clover is reminiscent of a high-end stereo and, with a gleaming stainless-steel surface and blue LED readout, is clearly designed to embody a similar tweaky-geeky aesthetic. A big, black knob allows me to navigate the configuration options and dial in each cup's specifications: I choose 16 ounces of water at 203 degrees Fahrenheit for 44 seconds -- relatively brief compared with the few minutes a French press takes.

When I press the "Brew" button, a circular platform sinks down from the top of the machine into a steamy cylindrical operating chamber. I'm sure I'm not the first Clover user to experience a quick flashback to a vivid childhood memory -- watching, horrified, as Darth Vader lowers Han Solo into his carbonite freezer. I have just a couple of seconds to pour a measure of coffee into the chamber before the built-in spigot activates and spurts exactly 16 ounces of hot water onto the grounds. The coffee steeps for the programmed 44 seconds, and then, like a French press in reverse, the platform rises, pushing the grounds back up to the surface. As it ascends, a vacuum separates the liquid from the grounds, sucking the brewed coffee down through a micro-perforated filter and into the hidden depths of the machine. By the time the platform returns to its original position (flush with the machine's top), all that's left on it is a tightly compressed puck of wet grounds, which I squeegee into a waste bin. A second press of the master button dispenses the coffee from the front of the machine.

Stationed at the Clover, I spend two hours and a $50 pound of good beans trying to make the coffee sing, to achieve the cup of my dreams.

The first cup has a muddy, dark taste with too much roasted flavour, although the butterscotch richness of the beans comes through. For the second cup, I keep the brewing time and the ratio of water to coffee the same, but I dial the temperature up from 203 degrees to 206 degrees. Immediately there's a difference: This one is far closer to perfect -- resonant with floral and citric aromas and round, up-front sweetness -- but it lacks a certain substance. I start to pick up the rhapsodic coffeegeek argot, bantering about brightness, notes, extraction. Latourell prescribes a coarser grind for the next cup, explaining to the baristas hovering near us that "counterintuitively, broadening the grind profile adds body!"

But this strategy doesn't seem to work: The third cup, brewed with the same parameters as the second, is thin, with none of the previous transporting scents. I recklessly crank the temperature to 210 degrees, and the coffee that squirts out is dramatically different -- it could pass for a different bean. The complex jasmine notes that distinguished the cups so far are gone, replaced by a delicate wininess that reminds me of Kalamata olives. I wonder: Could I brew a cup with the jasmine and the olives side by side?

I'm becoming a Clover addict, just as I feared. It's not the tasty coffee itself that's drawing me in -- although that caffeine euphoria certainly colours my mood. It's the joy of tinkering, really delving into the possibilities of a coffee bean in a way I've never considered before. After several more cups, each with their own quirks, it's time to go: The baristas have finished sweeping up around our feet and are clearly eager to leave. But there's one more cup I want to try: I dial in the same settings that produced cup No. 2, the greatest success so far. Forty-four seconds later, there it is, the exact same delicate, floral-scented brew I remember. That's the consistency you pay for.

The immediate consequence of the Clover and its precision isn't necessarily better coffee, but more attention to coffee. By creating this rigorous laboratory-like brewing environment, it encourages cafes to explore the nuances of different beans, where and how they're grown and dried and sorted and roasted. And the attention

to nuance gets passed along to the customers: Grumpy's clientele can choose from a coffee menu listing several brews, including the Cruz del Sur, "punchy and bright with pear and green apple," and the San Jose El Yalu, "complex and crisp with butterscotch, grape, chocolate and plum."

The aspirational comparison of coffee to wine is obvious, and the passionate young Clover virtuosos at Cafe Grumpy indeed remind me of wine enthusiasts; they're seriously invested in their work, nothing like the sullen soy-foamers at Starbucks or even at other independent coffee shops I frequent. On the cafe's blog, barista Ed describes his recent visit to coffee farms in Panama.

For now, Latourell admits that wine may be "50 years ahead of coffee" technologically. "We're just starting to scratch the surface of what can be done with coffee, how we understand it." But that's changing fast.

The world of wine-making is wracked by a tension between the old, individualistic ways, in which each wine tastes distinctively of its origin, and the new methods that produce best-selling wines in a uniform "global" style divorced from regional characteristics. The story of coffee is the reverse -- until recently, coffees were blended and branded to suit a homogenous popular taste, and only now is there a rising interest in the expression of varietal and regional differences.

Is owning a Clover worth $11,000? Not for the individual -- don't be silly. But even a smattering of Clovers in the right hands promises to broaden the way we think about coffee. The very fact that an $11,000 coffee machine is receiving such excited media attention seems like a clear sign that we're headed toward a "third wave" of coffee, an age of terroir, aided by technology that can give different beans the different careful treatments they deserve. In the foretold era, popular dark roasts, which obscure those subtleties, are scorned, and enlightened customers gladly pay exorbitantly for rare brews.

Watching the booming trade at Cafe Grumpy, the change seems inevitable: In certain circles, at least, the generic over-the-counter stimulant Latourell dismissively calls "brown liquid that costs a buck" will give way to increasingly common $10 and $15 cups of recherche coffee. At that rate, a small Clover designed for the home -- "of course there's talk of making one," says Latourell -- could start to sound like a smart, money-saving purchase. - Paul Adams writes about food and drinks.

Swiss Made "Worlds Smallest Gun" fires up some controversy


Meet the pistol that fits in your pocket - and packs a hell of a punch.

The SwissMiniGun is the size of a key fob but fires tiny 270mph bullets powerful enough to kill at close range.

Officially the world's smallest working revolver, the gun is being marketed as a collector's item and measures just 2.16 inches long (5.5cm). It can fire real 4.53 bullets up to a range of 367ft (112m).

The stainless steel gun costs £3,000 although the manufacturers also produce extravagant, made-to-order versions made out of 18-carat gold with customised diamond studs which sell for up to £30,000.

It cannot be imported into the UK, and buyers in Switzerland and Europe must produce an import permit from police to obtain one.

The gun is banned from being imported into the US - because it's barrel is less than three inches, meaning it is deemed too small to qualify for sporting purposes.

Jonathan Spencer, consultant forensic scientist and firearms expert, said that although the gun, which fires bullets at a speed of 399 feet a second, was tiny, it could still prove fatal and in the eyes of the law was as dangerous as a machine gun.

He said: "The general threshold for perforating the skin is about 330 feet a second.

"Apart from bone, skin offers the greatest resistance to penetration. If it can pass through the skin it is potentially lethal, even if the bullets are small.

"If you shoved something 3mm across into someone's chest you could kill them. It's the same with these bullets, they could penetrate the heart.

"It is capable of killing someone. Under section 5 of the Firearms Act it would be a prohibited weapon. It would be on the same scale as a machine gun."

The gun shoots 2.34 mm calibre rim fire ammunition especially developed for it as the smallest rim fire ammunition in the world.

It weighs in at just 0.7oz (19.8grams) and fires live and blank ammunition.

The gun is the first product of the SwissMiniGun company, a gunsmiths based at La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.

Owner Paul Erard said that since the product's launch three years ago, the firm had sold around 300 of the guns, mainly to collectors in the Middle and Far East.

He said: "We are producing in very small quantities - perhaps 25 gold guns and 100 steel guns a year, and there is a six month waiting list to get one.

"We will make whatever the customer wishes for. The most expensive version we have sold cost £30,000 and was covered in diamonds and came with a gold chain."

Other bespoke finishes available include ebony grips, hand engraved grips, gold grips with diamonds or collared precious stones.

Mr Erard said that although the double action revolver is similar in appearance to a Colt Python full-size weapon, it was actually based on a Swiss-made revolver.

In September 2006 the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives(ATF) in New York issued a warning about the gun after being alerted by a police officer who spotted it on a website.

Special Agent William McMahon said the gun was so small it could pass for a key fob, and warned it made the perfect stealth weapon for serious criminals.

But Mr Erard denied the gun was deadly and said it was only a tenth as powerful as some air guns.

"Since September 11 there has been a lot of paranoia in America", he said.

"It is ridiculous. Why would criminals want my gun when you can go out and buy a Kalashnikov there already?"

A Guinness World Records spokesman confirmed the gun held the record as the word's smallest working revolver.

Hotmail is down - East coast of USA seeing problems accessing their Hotmail account

Users in the Northeast US have been reporting access to Hotmail services have been down for the past hour.

Other Microsoft websites (and Live.com e-mail) are reachable but extremely slow, including numerous pages at MSN.com.

Those trying to access via Hotmail.com are timing out.

"For several hours now I have received the below faithful screen every time trying to log in to my hotmail account.

It’s kind of strange for a server farm as large as Hotmail to be down like this not to mention twice in one month. Anyone else experiencing this right now?" reports Listen to Taz Rant blog.

The fact that Hotmail is down seems to be wide spread and much longer than the “blip” outages Microsoft usually experiences. Blog entries on the topic are growing as are queries. Time to switch to Gmail.

Naked Pictures of Lindsay Lohan brought down Server

Well, New York Magazine's 'Playboy'-esque foray into nudie pics has been incredibly successful. This week's photos of the completely naked, barely-legal Lindsay Lohan have garnered the print magazine plenty of attention, not to mention the NYMag Web site, which got more traffic than it could handle than it could handle. In fact, http://Lindsayfollies.blogspot.com was hit with a flood of visitors looking to catch a glimpse of the Naked Lindsay which were also posted there.

The star of 'Herbie Fully Loaded' and Disney's misguided remake of 'The Parent Trap' shed her garments to recreate Marilyn Monroe's last nude photo shoot, which has come to be known as 'The Last Sitting.' The images were shot by Bert Stern, who created the original photo shoot with Monroe back in 1962. The be-freckled, former red-head generated so much Web traffic for the magazine that for a while on Monday the site was completely inaccessible.

According to Forbes and Portfolio.com, the New York magazine site -- which published a slide show of the photo shoot, as well as some outtakes -- received 40 million views over the first two days that it was up (around 2,000 percent more than usual). Meanwhile, the magazine got 500 more subscription requests than it usually gets in a week. To boot, Forbes is reporting that Bert Stern was paid a standard fee for doing the shoot, and Lohan apparently did the shoot for nothing (which is a whole lot cheaper than the figures some celebrity publications pay for images of stars). So it looks like New York magazine really made a good deal here.

There are two lessons to be learned here. First, the Web can still help bring some business to beleagured print magazines, especially if you choose a lusted-after starlet to pose nude. Second, if you're going to post pictures of starlets' nipples, then you need to invest in some extra capacity so your Web site isn't brought to its knees.

US Military to shoot down Toxic satellite from space - Sounds like a Bruce Willis Movie to me

HOUSTON - Less than a month ago, White House officials said a falling spy satellite would likely pose little threat to humans — but on Thursday, the Pentagon said President Bush himself approved an unorthodox plan to destroy the satellite with a missile strike.

What could warrant such a change of heart? It's the realization that the spacecraft could be bringing a toxic iceberg back down to Earth.

Aboard the 2.5-ton derelict satellite, designated "USA-193," is a fuel tank containing half a ton of hydrazine. Since the satellite went dead within hours after launch 14 months ago, the fuel has not been depleted by normal rocket maneuvers.

Hydrazine is a nasty chemical that could poison the area where it is released. Until recently, U.S. officials were saying that the tank would be crushed as the satellite fell through the atmosphere, sometime in early March. If that were the case, the toxic hydrazine would almost certainly be burned off and safely dispersed during the fiery fall.

NASA Administrator Michael Griffin sketched out a different scenario, however, during Thursday's news conference with Gen. James Cartwright, the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Griffin said NASA experts calculated that the hydrazine was frozen solid due to the satellite’s yearlong drift through the cold of space. The tank, with its half-ton ice core of hydrazine, would thus become one of the most perfect re-entry vehicles ever to fall back to Earth.

Griffin explained that the contents of the tank could turn to slush during the fall, but would very likely survive and leak toxic gas over the crash site. Another expert told msnbc.com privately that the solid ice would provide structural support against the 20 to 25 G’s of deceleration experienced by the satellite during re-entry.

Safety first?

Pentagon officials said it was that safety concern, rather than the intention to test a potential anti-satellite weapon, which led them to develop the plan for a missile intercept. They hope the impact of the warhead on a modified Standard Missile-3, or SM-3, will shatter the satellite — and particularly the spherical hydrazine tank. The first shot could occur as early as next week, after the space shuttle Atlantis' return from its mission to the international space station.

Would a direct hit be required? Experts on space debris told msnbc.com that even a glancing blow would likely be enough. The force of a missile hitting an orbiting object is much more violent than the force of a bullet striking a target, or even an anti-aircraft missile hitting an airplane. In the space case, the tremendous speed of the impact carries so much kinetic energy that both vehicles literally explode due to the hypersonic shock waves sweeping through their structures.

If the missile strike leads to such a disintegration, sharp observers should be able to spot the ice fragments from the fuel tank. As the fragments evaporate in direct sunlight, they could create mini-comets visible from Earth’s surface, lasting for hours before dispersing.



Pentagon officials said the intercept would occur within range of military optical and radar sensors. Their goal would be to confirm the existence of dispersed hydrazine in the debris. If the sensors don't show the fuel dispersing, missile operators would target the fragment judged most likely to be the still-surviving fuel tank. A second shot could occur within a day or two of the first.

Giving the missiles a boost

Last week's orbital readings indicated that the satellite was circling Earth at an altitude between 160 and 168 miles (255 and 268 kilometers) and descending at an increasing rate, currently about six-tenths of a mile (1 kilometer) per day. Gen. Cartwright said the intercept would be attempted when the satellite descended to about 150 miles (240 kilometers).

The SM-3 has typically been used for testing the Pentagon's missile defense system, and reaches a nominal maximum altitude of just 100 miles (160 kilometers). For the satellite intercept, three missiles — one each on three different AEGIS-class Navy cruisers — will be modified to reach the higher altitude.

This isn't the first time hydrazine has posed a problem in space: The fuel freezes at temperatures below 36 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius), and satellites without active heating will drop to temperatures below that — as a case involving the Soviet Salyut 7 space station demonstrated dramatically in 1985.

After Salyut 7's power system failed, the water in its supply tanks froze solid, along with the hydrazine in its propulsion system. A pair of cosmonauts reached the icy station and were able to activate its electrical system, and then carefully thawed the frozen tanks.

Google anounces a "Doodle for Google" Competition with a 35K grand prize


Google on Wednesday announced the launch of “Doodle 4 Google,” a competition that invites school children to design a Google logo inspired by the question, “What If ...?”

The winning student’s doodle will be displayed on the Google homepage on May 22, 2008; the champion “doodler” will also win a $10,000 college scholarship and a $25,000 technology grant for his/her school.

The “Doodle 4 Google” competition is open to U.S. students K-12.

Participating classrooms can use accompanying lesson plans to help students start dreaming and doodling, while also integrating the project into classroom learning.

Students’ doodles will be judged on artistic merit, creativity and representation of the theme. Panels of regional judges will select 40 top doodles across age groups, from which the public will help select the final four. The grand-prize winner will then be selected by Google and announced at an event hosted at Google’s headquarters on May 21, 2008. The doodle will be displayed on the Google homepage the following day.




The customization of the Google logo started in 1999, and is now designed almost exclusively by Google Webmaster Dennis Hwang, whose work is seen by millions every time he exhibits on the Google homepage. The 29-year-old calls his drawings “doodles.”

Dennis has creatively depicted worldwide events, anniversaries and holidays with doodles that incorporate the Google logo for the world of users to celebrate.


Teachers can register their class online by going to Doodle 4 Google.

Registration closes March 28 and all entries must be received by April 12.

New A2 hypersonic passenger jet under development
















The artist's impression looks like something out of a science fiction film. But a hypersonic passenger plane that could fly to Australia from northern Europe in less than five hours has been designed in Britain. With funding from the European Space Agency, a team of engineers and scientists has come up with the A2, a plane they believe could carry 300 passengers at a top speed of more than 3,000mph.

The project is part of an EU drive to push forward the boundaries of air travel. Scientists were asked to find out if it was possible to build a commercial plane that used the sort of technology more closely associated with travel to the edge of space and beyond.

Oxfordshire-based Reaction Engines designs and develops space transport and hi-tech propulsion systems. Its directors are experts in fields ranging from space rockets and weapons systems to nuclear power. One of the firm's main projects is the development of Skylon, an unpiloted reusable spaceplane intended to provide inexpensive and reliable access to space, which is expected to take approximately 10 years to develop and be capable of transporting 12 tonnes of cargo into space.

Alan Bond, a senior engineer and managing director at the company, said the A2 could be operating within 25 years if there was demand for it.

Bond said: "The A2 is designed to leave Brussels international airport, fly quietly and subsonically out into the north Atlantic at mach 0.9 before reaching mach 5 across the North Pole and heading over the Pacific to Australia.

"The flight time from Brussels to Australia, allowing for air traffic control, would be four hours 40 minutes. It sounds incredible by today's standards but I don't see why future generations can't make day trips to Australasia."

Reaction Engines estimates that the cost of the flight would be similar to a current first class fare. Moreover, the company claims, the plane would not leave much of a carbon footprint.

The key to the design is the fuel it would use. Conventional fuels would not be able to get the A2 up to the

necessary speed, and so Reaction Engines has designed an engine that would run on liquid hydrogen. A spin-off is that liquid hydrogen is potentially much greener than conventional fuel - rather than producing vast amounts of carbon emissions it gives off water vapour and nitrous oxide. Nitrous Oxide, is a dangerous greenhouse gas nearly 300 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. However, the developer, Reaction Engines, has a research project under way to devise ways of eliminating or capturing all of the NOX elements produced by the fuel.

Another advantage of the design is that while the 132 metre-long A2 is much bigger than conventional jets it would be lighter than a Boeing 747 and could land on current airport runways.

But there are a few hitches. For one thing, the A2 might not be great for anyone who suffers from claustrophobia, as it does not have portholes. The heat generated by travelling so quickly makes it difficult to install windows that are secure and not too heavy. One solution Reaction Engines has proposed is to install flat screen panels where the window would be, showing images of the scene outside.

In recent days the design has been discussed excitedly on science and environment talkboards. Some believe it would be too expensive to produce commercially. There is also concern that producing the liquid hydrogen could prove to be more environmentally damaging than Reaction Engines believes. And there are fears that because the plane would fly at around the height of the ozone layer it could cause damage to the atmosphere.

Still, Bond said that within 25 years 10% of air travel could be hypersonic. Some routes, such as Europe to India, would not work so well, because the plane would have to go a long way round to avoid having to travel at supersonic speeds over populated areas. But he thought the A2 could get to California by travelling hypersonically across the Atlantic, then conventionally across the US. Reaction Engines claims it would be quieter than Concorde ever was.

Bond accepted the project was still at the early exploratory stages. The next phase is more work on the A2's environmental impact. "Our work shows that it is possible technically; now it's up to the world to decide if it wants it."

Explainer: Concorde's legacy

The owner of the first hypersonic airline will have to overcome the failed legacy of Concorde, which made its last passenger flight nearly five years ago. British Airways and Air France grounded the supersonic service after a decline in bookings and a series of technical problems.

The root cause of its failure - low passenger demand - is a warning to all backers of futuristic aviation projects. Despite the benefits of a three-and-a-half hour flight time, its owners struggled to convince enough customers to pay £6,800 for a return ticket from London to New York.

The economic considerations were also underpinned by serious doubts over safety following a crash in Paris eight years ago in which 113 people died.

Chris Tarry, an aviation industry analyst, said a hypersonic jet service would be many times more expensive and would raise serious questions about passengers' ability to withstand sub-orbital travel. Similar concerns helped ground the Hotol hypersonic passenger jet project run by BAe, the defence company, more than a decade ago.

"Is this a commercial means of travel? No. You have to have something that is viable," said Tarry.

Doubts over the cost and safety of sub-orbital flights are not putting off entrepreneurs, however. Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic venture intends to put passengers into space by the end of the decade and has already signed up 200 customers who have paid $30m in deposits.

Thursdays Space Shuttle Launch might be delayed

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA fueled shuttle Atlantis for liftoff Thursday, exhilarated over the success of fuel gauge repairs but mindful that bad weather could delay the mission to add another science lab to the international space station.

Forecasters said there was a 70 percent chance that rain, clouds and possibly even a severe afternoon thunderstorm would keep Atlantis on the pad for yet another day. The space shuttle already is two months late in delivering the European lab, Columbus, to the space station.

Faulty fuel gauges grounded Atlantis in December. Engineers worked round the clock and through the holidays to fix the problem, which turned out to be a bad connector in the external fuel tank.

Their efforts paid off. All four fuel gauges checked out fine as the countdown entered its final few hours. NASA never got so far in the countdown in December, and the excitement was evident in launch control and astronaut quarters, where the seven-man crew suited up.

"We have a good system and we're ready to go fly," said launch director Doug Lyons. "Everything looks real good out there."

Even NASA's normally emotion-free boss, Michael Griffin, was enthusiastic. He said he was sure Atlantis' fuel gauges would continue to work properly and predicted no further problems with the system.

The fuel gauges are part of a critical safety system to help ensure that the main engines do not run on an unexpectedly empty tank during the 8 1/2-minute climb to orbit. They have performed erratically during countdowns for nearly three years and postponed several launches.

As for the weather, "We're still talking what, 60, 70 percent probability of no-go. But it doesn't look too bad," Griffin said, pulling aside blinds and looking out a window at the cloudy sky. "We've launched on days when we said we couldn't and we've scrubbed on days when everybody thought we could."

Columbus — a $2 billion high-tech laboratory — is the European Space Agency's primary contribution to the space station. In the making for 23 years, the lab has endured station redesigns and slowdowns, as well as a number of shuttle postponements and two shuttle accidents.

It will join the U.S. lab, Destiny, already flying for seven years. The much bigger Japanese lab Kibo, or Hope, will require three shuttle flights to get off the ground, beginning in March.

The Europeans also are on the verge of launching their new cargo ship, Jules Verne. It's scheduled to blast off from French Guiana in early March.

"There's going to be a lot of pride, a lot of people with good feelings in their stomachs, when these things go up," said Europe's space station program manager, Alan Thirkettle.

The European Space Agency already has spent more than $7 billion on the station program and plans to invest another $6 billion by 2015, Thirkettle said.

Besides Columbus, Atlantis will drop off a new space station resident, a French Air Force general who will take the place of NASA astronaut Daniel Tani and get Columbus working. Tani will return to Earth aboard the shuttle, ending a mission of nearly four months.

NASA is anxious to get Atlantis flying as soon as possible to keep alive its plan for six shuttle missions this year. The space agency faces a 2010 deadline for finishing the station and retiring the shuttles.
