From the Winterpeg Sun
Like we needed another reason to hate Nickelback.
In addition to their well-documented crimes against music, it would appear the critically reviled (yet beloved-by-fans) foursome are one of the things standing in the way of Britney Spears bringing her comeback tour to Winnipeg.
Spears -- the beleaguered pop princess whose divorce, drug addiction, career meltdown and subsequent revival have singlehandedly kept the gossip industry afloat in recent years -- announced yesterday a 27-stop tour of North America in support of her new CD Circus.
Dubbed The Circus Starring Britney Spears 2009 Tour, the jaunt is focused mostly on the U.S., though it does bring Brit-Brit to four Canadian cities: Toronto (March 19), Montreal (March 20), Edmonton (April 6) and Vancouver (April 8).
But even though there's a two-night gap between her Minneapolis show (April 3) and the Edmonton date, True North spokesman Kevin Donnelly says there's no way for Britney to squeeze the MTS Centre into her schedule.
"In the immediate future, there's no chance," Donnelly said yesterday. "We had no available dates to offer them in that stretch -- we've got hockey on (April) 3rd and 4th, and Nickelback on the 5th."
But fear not, fans. Donnelly hasn't ruled out a gig by Spears -- whose last local appearance was a July 1999 show at Centennial Concert Hall -- later in the year.
"We're always optimistic, and we'll be watching the success of the tour very closely," said Donnelly. "If it looks like they're adding any additional dates, we'll be all over it."
Tickets to Britney's Canadian shows go on sale Saturday, Dec. 6 through Ticketmaster. Fans can check www.britneyspears.com for more information.
